Subject: Who was Kronrod?
Dear Colleagues,
A S. Kronrod made important contributions to numerical analysis by
his work on quadrature rules. Through the efforts of Viola Brudno,
Walter Gautschi and Vladimir Druskin a translation of "Remembering
A. S. Kronrod" by E. M. Landis and I. M. Yaglom is now available. His
life was quite complicated; he was a man of mathematical depth and
his interests were amazingly broad. You can obtain the remembrance from

Subject: Global Optimization by Multilevel Coordinate Search
Global Optimization by Multilevel Coordinate Search (MCS)
Source: http://solon.cma.univie.ac.at/~neum/software/mcs/
MCS is a Matlab program for bound constrained global optimization
using function values only, based on a multilevel coordinate search
that balances global and local search. The local search is done via
sequential quadratic programming. The search is not exhaustive; so the
global minimum may be missed. However, a comparison to other global
optimization algorithms shows excellent performance in many cases,
especially in low dimensions.
The new version 2.0 of MCS (from Feb. 8, 2000) runs under Matlab 5
and has a lot of small changes compared to the previous version.
In particular, a bug involving the option including the local solver
was removed.)
MCS now contains a driver for an easy to use version that runs without
any parameters that need to be set by the user; thus MCS can be used
as a completely black box. However, experienced users may make more
sophisticated choices, according to suggestions specified explicitly.

Subject: Block Conjugate Gradient Method for Large Symmetric Eigenproblems
The most recent MATLAB revision (currently 3.2.8, 2000/2/4) of my
LOBPCG (Locally Optimal Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient) Method
is now publicly available at
http://www-math.cudenver.edu/~aknyazev/software/CG/
Main features:
A matrix-free iterative method for computing several extreme eigenpairs
of large symmetric positive generalized eigenproblems;
A user-defined symmetric positive preconditioner (a good preconditioner
for a stiffness matrix works well for the corresponding eigenvalue
problem, too!);
Robustness with respect to random initial approximations, variable
preconditioners, and ill-conditioning (up to 10^15) of the stiffness
matrix of the eigenproblem;
Apparently optimal convergence speed.
Numerical comparisons suggest that LOBPCG is a genuine analog for
eigenproblems of the standard
Preconditioned conjugate gradient method for symmetric linear systems.
The algorithm of LOBPCG is described in
Andrew Knyazev, Toward the Optimal Preconditioned Eigensolver: Locally
Optimal Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method, Tech. Report,
UCD-CCM 149, Jan. 2000, see
http://www-math.cudenver.edu/ccmreports/rep149.ps.gz
The paper above also introduces Preconditioned Eigensolvers Benchmarking
and presents some benchmarking results for LOBPCG. All benchmarking
m-files are available at
http://www-math.cudenver.edu/~aknyazev/software/CG/
The LOBPCG code is supported. Please contact me ASAP if you find any bugs,
or have any suggestions on further numerical testing. Feel free to email
directly, or to use an Interactive HyperNews group on eigensolvers at

Subject: Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications
Dear na-digest readers,
The journal of Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications (NLA)
is printed by Wiley&Sons Inc since 1994.
You can find more details, for instance at
http://www.interscience.wiley.com/jpages/1070-5325/
It is my pleasure to announce that the journal reached the
impact factor 0.741 in 1998 , compared to 0.550 in 1997.
NLA's cited half-life is 3.3, which is also said to be very good.
This means that more than 50% of the over 100 yearly cited articles
from the NLA journal are cited in less then 3.3 years time.
Most mature engineering journals are closer to 10 years.
This is of course thanks to interesting papers being submitted,
and also due to the voluntarily highly qualified work of referees
from and outside the NLA Editorial Board.
It is strived for a short turnaround time of submitted papers.
The shortest has been 8 months from submission to publication.
In order to facilitate the submission and handling of papers
in such a timely fashion, Dr. Panayot Vassilevski (Lawrence
Livermore Nat.Lab.) has been appointed as a co-editor and you
are welcome to submit papers either to him or to me.
Sincerely,
Owe Axelsson, general editor of NLA

The 29th International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP 2000)
Toronto, Canada, August 21-24, 2000
The importance and ubiquity of the World Wide Web for research and
commerce is increasing rapidly. With this growth comes the inevitable
strain on services provided through the Web, from limited metacomputing
resources to domain name competition. High performance computing both
benefits from the high degree of connectivity, while significantly
impacting resource availability. Technologies such as agents,
metacomputing systems, distributed caching systems, and enhanced
scheduling methodologies are all advancing to meet the information
distribution needs of a wired world. The proposed workshop intends to
bring together the researchers and practitioners working on diverse
aspects of this important emerging area in order to identify current
status, fundamental issues, future problems and applications. We invite
papers describing both theoretical and experimental research as well as
experience reports and position papers. Of particular interest are
experiences with parallel computing techniques and applications within the
Web domain.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Impact of high performance computing on Web services
How high performance computing can benefit from the Web
Metacomputing/the Computational Grid
Caching/load balancing on the Web
Infrastructures Issues

E-commerce systems
Service Issues: Interface and Semantics, Discovery/Advertisement
