CALL FOR ENTRIES
LESLIE FOX PRIZE MEETING, OXFORD UNIVERSITY, 22 JUNE 2001
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: 19 FEBRUARY 2001
The Tenth Leslie Fox Prize meeting will take place on 22 June 2001 at
the Oxford University Computing Laboratory, on the Friday before the
19th Dundee Biennial Conference on Numerical Analysis
(http://www.maths.dundee.ac.uk/~naconf/).
Entries for the Tenth Leslie Fox Prize competition are now requested.
Any person who is less than 31 years old on January 1 2001 and has not
already won a first prize in a previous Fox Prize competition is
eligible. Each entry should consist of three copies of a paper,
describing some of the candidate's research, that is suitable for a
40-minute lecture at a numerical analysis symposium. Whether or not the
work has been published or accepted for publication is irrelevant, but
no person may submit more than one paper. Candidates from previous
competitions are encouraged to enter.
The entries will be considered by an Adjudicating Committee consisting of
Prof. L.N. Trefethen (Oxford), Prof. A. Iserles (Cambridge), and Prof.
A. Spence (Bath). Particular attention will be given to the originality
and quality of each paper and to the suitability of the material for a
40-minute talk to a general audience of numerical analysts. About six papers
will be selected by the Committee by the end of March for presentation
at the Leslie Fox Prize meeting. Only papers presented at the
symposium will be eligible for awards but, subject to this restriction,
the Adjudicating Committee may award any number of first and second
prizes.
Entries should be received by 19 February 2001. Each candidate should
include a statement of his or her year of birth and should indicate
that he or she would be available to present a paper at the symposium.
Single-authored papers are preferred. Although a joint paper may be
submitted by an individual candidate, the entry must primarily be the
original work of the candidate, and must be accompanied by a statement
from the co-authors agreeing to the submission and detailing the
contribution of the candidate to the paper. Travel funds are not
generally available to assist candidates who attend the symposium. The
receipt of all entries will be acknowledged. Any question on this
notice should be addressed to a member of the Adjudicating Committee.

The awards will be made from the SIAM Student Travel Fund, created in
1991 and maintained through book royalties donated by some SIAM
authors. At the beginning of each year, a committee determines the
number of travel awards to be given to support student travel to each
SIAM meeting or conference.
Any full-time student in good standing who must travel more than 100
miles to the meeting is eligible to receive an award plus gratis
meeting registration. Top consideration is given to students
presenting papers at the meeting, with second priority to students who
are co-authors of papers to be presented.
An application for a travel award must include:
1) A letter from the student describing his/her academic standing
and interests, his/her expected graduation date and degree,
advisor's name, and, if available, a URL for a working web page.
2) A one-page vita that includes the student's research interests,
projects, and published papers.
3) A detailed letter from the student's faculty advisor indicating
why the student deserves to receive a travel award and any
special circumstances.
4) If applicable, the title(s) of the paper(s) to be presented
(co-authored) by the student at the meeting.
COMPLETE APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED AT SIAM NO LATER THAN TWO
MONTHS BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF THE MEETING FOR WHICH SUPPORT IS
REQUESTED.

Subject: SIAM Northwest Regional Math in Industry Workshop
The SIAM Northwest Regional Workshop on Mathematics in Industry
will take place Oct. 12--14, 2000, at the University of Washington.
This is the fifth Workshop in a series of regional meetings focused
on mathematics in industry. These Workshops (funded by an NSF grant
to SIAM) are intended to provide a forum for discussion on
Applied/Industrial Mathematics Programs.
The goal of the Northwest Workshop is to facilitate discussion between
faculty, students, and mathematicians working in industry and national
laboratories. The program will feature talks by representatives from
local industry and national laboratories describing both their technical
work and the opportunities for collaboration with academia and for
summer internships. Additionally a number of university programs designed
to enhance university/industry interactions or to prepare students for
careers in industry will be described and there will be discussions of
related undergraduate and graduate curriculum issues. Current and former
students will describe their experiences working in industry and national
laboratories, while parallel sessions will focus on more specific problem
areas.

Workshop on Meshfree Methods
at the University of Iowa
November 4, 2000
Recently, a next generation of numerical methods, collectively
called meshfree methods or meshless methods, have attracted more
and more researchers in computational sciences and engineering.
Meshfree methods have been successfully applied in several areas
where the application of the traditional finite element method
is limited.
A workshop on meshfree methods will be held at the University of
Iowa on Saturday, November 4, 2000. The aim of this workshop is
to bring together mathematicians, computer scientists and
engineering researchers to exchange ideas, results and applications
of the meshfree methods. The workshop will provide a good
opportunity especially for numerical analysts as many fundamental
issues related to the meshfree methods still need to be investigated.
The workshop is sponsored by IMA and NSF/DARPA. There is no
registration fee for attending the workshop. Mathematicians
from IMA Participating Institutions are eligible to receive
IMA/PI funds for the workshop expenses, where available and if
approved by the mathematician's own department chair. A limited
amount of fund is available to partially support some other
participants of the workshop.

Young researchers group in inverse problems
The Institut for Numerical and Applied Mathematics of

establishing a young researchers group with the title
"New Numerical Methods for the Solution of Inverse
Problems". This group will be created through a recent
initiative of the state of Lower Saxony. Within a five
year period the objective of the group will be to develop
new numerical methods for the solution of inverse
problems for partial differential equations, in particular
for three-dimensional inverse scattering problems and
related problems. This research will include both the
theoretical foundations and the numerical implementation
of the methods including tests with real data arising in

Announcing an EPSRC postgraduate studentship and a postdoctoral
fellowship in the area of
Geometric Integrators/Scientific Computing
in the Centre for Mathematical Modelling, University of Leicester.
Funding has been provided by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences
Research Council for a 3-year graduate studentship and a 2-year postdoc
on a project led by Professor Ben Leimkuhler. The goal of the project
is to develop new advanced timestepping algorithms for applications such
as molecular dynamics simulation and smoothed particle hydrodynamics.
The successful applicants will have been pursuing studies in
mathematics, physics, or engineering, and have an interest in scientific

and engineers as part of the newly-formed interdisciplinary Centre for

IGERT: Interdisciplinary Traineeship in High Performance
Computing Applications at Wayne State University
Graduate fellowships supported by the NSF-IGERT program--with a
total yearly stipend of $23,266--are available for qualified U.S.
citizens and permanent residents in a high-performance computing
applications program in science, engineering or medicine.
This IGERT project integrates ongoing interdisciplinary research
efforts in WSU's new Institute for Scientific Computing into a
cooperative traineeship program.
Wayne State University has also initiated a new interdisciplinary
Masters/Ph. D. curriculum which includes a Certificate in Scientific
Computing.

At Interior Point Methods (IPM-2000) workshop, which was a
pre-conference meeting of the EURO-2000, Continuous Optimization
Working Group (EUROPT) of EURO has been established.
At EURO-2000 a Linear and Nonlinear Programming sub-stream is
organized. To celebrate the establishment of EUROOPT
a special issue of EJOR will be published.
