WSMP: Watson Sparse Matrix Package
A Serial/Parallel Direct General/Symmetric Sparse Solver
Part I -- direct solution of symmetric sparse systems
ftp://ftp.cs.umn.edu/users/kumar/anshul/wsmp1.ps
Part II -- direct solution of general sparse systems
ftp://ftp.cs.umn.edu/users/kumar/anshul/wsmp2.ps
We are pleased to announce the availability of Version 1.0 of WSMP
(Watson Sparse Matrix Package) --- a robust, high-performance, easy-
to-use serial and parallel software for the direct solution of general
and symmetric sparse linear systems on IBM RS6000 and SP platforms.
WSMP enhances the capabilities of the older package WSSMP and renders
it obsolete. WSMP can solve symmetric sparse systems without partial
pivoting on a serial or SMP RS6000 workstation and on an IBM SP with
serial or SMP nodes. In addition, it can solve general/unsymmetric sparse
systems with partial pivoting on a serial or SMP RS6000.
Currently, WSMP is freely available to RS6000 and SP users. Please
refer to the documentation (see links to the FTP site above) for details
on obtaining and using the software. Questions pertaining to WSMP, as
well as comments, bug reports, and errors/typos in the documentation may
be directed to anshul@watson.ibm.com.

Subject: SBmethod, A C++ Code for Large Scale Eigenvalue Optimization
SBmethod - A C++ code for large scale eigenvalue optimization
SBmethod implements the spectral bundle method for minimizing
the maximum eigenvalue of an affine matrix function (real and
symmetric). The code is intended for large scale problems. It
supports sign constraints on the design variables and allows
to exploit structural properties of the matrices such as
sparsity and low rank structure.
The code comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY and is free under
the terms of the Gnu General Public License, Version 2.

NONCONVEX OPTIMIZATION AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Volume 45
This book presents a new approach to global non-convex constrained
optimization. Problem dimensionality is reduced via space-filling
curves. To economize the search, constraint is accounted separately
(penalties are not employed). The multicriteria case is also considered.
All techniques are generalized for (non-redundant) execution on
multiprocessor systems.
Audience: Researchers and students working in optimization, applied
mathematics, and computer science.

Subject: Research Position at ZIB, Berlin
RESEARCH POSITION at
KONRAD-ZUSE-ZENTRUM FUER INFORAMTIONSTECHNIK BERLIN (ZIB):
Starting with January 1, 2001 we have an opening at the
German BAT IIa/Ib level with a duration of three years in the
following project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education
and Research (BMBF), Grant 03-HEM2B4 (applications will be
accepted till the position is filled).
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Our industrial partner operates several warehouses within
the same city. Some of these warehouses are too small to
hold sufficient stock of each product for the day; therefore,
goods are constantly transferred between warehouses by
a shuttle service consisting of several trucks. Part of
the demand is known in advance, part is stochastic and has
to be estimated from available statistical data.
The task is to find a schedule that distributes the goods
between the warehouses by means of the trucks so that demand
can be satisfied on time with high probability. This requires
the development of a stochastic model of the demand, a basic
understanding of the logistics involved, the development and
implementation of optimization methods, and the evaluation of
these approaches in simulations. In this you will be part of
a young team of open-minded researches that will help you to
get into the subject but also expects that you are prepared
and willing to share responsibilities.
Candidates wishing to complete their Ph.D. or Habilitation
in connection with this project are strongly encouraged
to do so.
REQUIREMENTS:
- advanced degree in mathematics or computer science
- experience in any of the following fields would be an advantage:
+ convex optimization
+ stochastic programming
+ stochastic processes
+ combinatorial optimization
- reasonable programming skills in C/C++
- knowledge of German is an advantage; otherwise, English is
necessary and you should be willing to learn German in order
to communicate with our industrial partners.
We expect that you have a strong commitment to the project and
to research in this field, that you are capable of working in a
team and acquaint yourself with new fields and skills when needed.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
ZIB is a research laboratory of the state of Berlin, Germany.
You will be part of the optimization group within the Scientific
Computing department. The optimization group consists of roughly
twenty young scientists from various countries and has a very
strong record of successful industrial projects.
ZIB maintains a well equipped library and is in close contact
to the three universities in Berlin. It offers excellent
possibilities for starting or advancing a scientific career.
To learn more about ZIB visit http://www.zib.de
Last but not least, since the fall of the wall Berlin has been
booming. It is probably the liveliest, most interesting, and
fastest changing city in Europe.

Applicants for this position (number 07/00) should send a CV,
in German or English, and a covering letter including contact
information for two or three references to:
