Subject: GeoFEM, Parallel FEM Platform
Dear Colleagues,
RIST (Research Organization for Information Science & Technology,
Japan) has released the GeoFEM ver.5.0, a parallel finite element platform.
GeoFEM is delveloped as the part of the Japanese national project,
"Parallel Platform for Large Scale Solid Earth Simulation" funded by
"Special Promoting Funds of Science & Technology" of the Ministry of
Education, Science and Technology, Japan which has been conducted since 1998.
GeoFEM includes parallel finite element codes for linear/nonlinear solid
mechanics and thermal fluid simulations, parallel iterative linear solver
library, partitioning subsystem, parallel visualization subsystem and
utilities for parallel I/O and coupling of multiple codes. GeoFEM is
originally developed for solid earth simulation but applicable for various
types of engineering and science applications. Users also plug-in their own
FEM codes to GeoFEM platform and can develop parallel FEM code easily.
GeoFEM is written in Fortran 90 and MPI (part of visualization/utility
subsystems in C and C++) and can work on various types of platforms from
LINUX clusters to massively parallel computers.
Researchers and engineers interested in GeoFEM can get information at
the following website :
http://geofem.tokyo.rist.or.jp/
Source files of the entire codes, example input/output files and
documents can be downloaded from:
http://geofem.tokyo.rist.or.jp/download_en/
New features in ver.5.0 are as follows :
1. Intel Fortran Compiler (32bit) on Linux is now supported through special
patches.
2. Newly developed "Parallel Surface/Volume Rendering (PSR/PVR)" modules for
visualization are available in "visualization" subsystem.
3. 2nd order hexaheron (332) and 1st & 2nd order tetrahedron (311 & 312) are
available in "static-linear" subsytem for 3D linear-elastic solid analysis.
4. Some bugs are fixed.
More detailed update information can be found at
http://geofem.tokyo.rist.or.jp/

Subject: Special Issue of Computational Statistics and Data Analysis
Computational Statistics and Data Analysis
Special Issue on APPLICATIONS OF OPTIMIZATION HEURISTICS
TO ESTIMATION AND MODELLING PROBLEMS
Guest Editors: Manfred Gilli and Peter Winker
Estimation and modelling problems as they arise in many fields often
turn out to be intractable by standard numerical methods. One way to
deal with such a situation consists in simplifying models and procedures.
However, the solutions to these simplified problems might not be
satisfying. A different approach consists in applying optimization
heuristics such as evolutionary algorithms (Simulated Annealing,
Threshold Accepting), neural networks, genetic algorithms, tabu search,
hybrid methods and many others, which have been developed over the last
two decades. Although the use of these methods became more standard in
several fields of sciences, their use in estimation and modelling
in statistics appears to be still limited.
We therefore invite submissions for a special issue of Computational
Statistics & Data Analysis on Applications of Optimization Heuristics
to estimation and modelling problems. We will consider papers
addressing estimation and modelling problems by making use of optimization
heuristics. Besides a discussion of the algorithm, the paper should
contribute some real application. Also welcome are discussions of the
computational complexity of estimation and modelling problems giving
rise to the use of optimization heuristics.
The DEADLINE for submissions is December 31, 2002.
The focus of the papers submitted to the special issue must contain
both computational and estimation or modelling components. Authors who are
uncertain as to the suitability of their papers for the special issue
should contact the special issue editors. All papers submitted must
contain original unpublished work that is not being submitted for
publication elsewhere. Manuscripts submitted to this special issue
will be refereed according to standard procedures for Computational
Science and Data Analysis. Information about the journal can be found
at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/csda
Electronic submission is encouraged. Please e-mail a postscript
or PDF file of your manuscript to one of the special issue editors:

Announcement of Vienna Winter School 01/2003
Vienna Winter School on the Mathematical Foundations
of Computational Sciences
January 26 till February 8, 2003
at Vienna University of Technology, Austria,
Intention
Almost all kind of engineering applications involve
numerical simulations to guarantee their quality,
durability or safety. Behind the most frequently
employed software packages lies a discretization of
a PDE, often a finite element method. In all those
cases, there exist a discretization error which can
be small or large, of minor or dominating significance.
It is the aim of the Vienna Winter School on the
Mathematical Foundations of Computational Sciences to
provide a direct introduction to reliable and efficient
computation and error control in numerical simulations.
The topics range from elementary functional analysis
(in the first week) to advanced adaptive finite element
techniques and applications (in the second week).
Students of Engineering and Natural Sciences with basic mathematical
background are welcome if interested in guaranteed convergence of
their FE schemes.
Details on a (moderate) fee will be fixed a.s.a.p. Please do not
hesitate to contact us for any assistance on your travel
arrangements or accommodation reservations in Vienna. The web site
http://gamm.tuwien.ac.at/winterschool2003/
maintains current and latest informations.

Subject: Workshop in Bari on ODEs
December 18-20, we will organize a three-day, international
numerical analysis workshop entitled
"International Workshop on the Technological Aspects of Mathematics -
Advances in computing and software development for Differential Equations"
SCOPE AND INTERESTS:
The need for efficiently solve Differential Equations arising from
different application areas has being playing an important role in
determining the research and development activities in many academic
and industrial branches.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together numerical analysts
applied mathematicians and researchers to
present, discuss and exchange ideas about the numerical solution of
differential problems.
This will be useful to collect ideas for updating, according to
the current requirements in real-life applications,
the TEST SET for IVP solvers (http://www.dm.uniba.it/~testset).
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE TEST SET:
It consists of a standard test set for Initial Value Problems (IVPs)
which includes documentation of the test problems, experimental results
from a number of proven solvers, and subroutines providing a common
interface to the defining problem functions.
Both engineers and computational scientists alike will benefit greatly
from having such a reference.
Engineers will be able to see at a glance which methods will
be most effective for their class of problems. Researchers will be able
to compare their new methods with the results of existing ones without
incurring additional programming workload; they will have a reference
with which their colleagues are familiar. This test set tries to fulfill
these demands and tries to set a standard for IVP solver testing.
For further details, the complete description and the structure of
the Test Set, please visit the url: http://www.dm.uniba.it/~testset
Among the main topics are:
Ordinary Differential Equations,
Differential Algebraic Equations,
Delay Differential Equations,
Boundary Value Problems,
Partial Differential Equations.
