Subject: Quadratic Constraint Problem
Hi,
I am working on a problem which requires solving a quadratic constraint
problem. The model for this problem is given below.
Parameters: matrix a(i,j), matrix b(i,k)
varaiables : d, vector x(i), vector y(j)
Objective : Maximize d
Constraints:
sum( (i,j), x(i)*y(j)*a(i,j)) - d >= sum(i,x(i)*b(i,k)) forall k =1...K
sum(i,x(i)) = 1
sum(j,y(j)) = 1
Bounds: x(i) >= 0 forall i, y(j) >= 0 forall j
Note: the parameters matrices a(i,j) and b(i,k) can be be transformed into
matrices of all positive or all negative real numbers if required.
Clearly one approach is to use any package that solves a non linear
programs(NLP) (infact I am implementing it using "donlp", and might try
on "lingo" or "knitro" as well, I am not sure which one is best suited)
The other possiblity in which I am intersted and where I can use some help is
to explore if this problem can be represented as a second order conic
problem(SOCP), in which case polynomial time solution would be possible using
interior point methods and there are some packages that can do that probably
"CPLEX" can do it. I have a feeling that it might be converted into a problem
with hyperbolic constraints (second order rotated cones), but my knowledge in
modelling NLPs is very limited.
In case, the problem cannot be modelled as a SOCP, can somebody suggest an
appropriate NLP solver that would be most suitable for this problem.
Infact knowing the reason why can this problem not be modelled as an SOCP
or may be semidefinite program would be intresting to me too.

Subject: Model Reduction for Finite Elements
Dear colleagues,
I would like to announce mor4ansys - a tool to perform model reduction
for finite element models developed in ANSYS. The source code for
mor4ansys is distributed under the GPL license
http://www.imtek.uni-freiburg.de/simulation/mor4ansys/
The goal of our tool is to employ the recent mathematical model
reduction algorithms for the finite elements models. In our experience
for thermal and structural mechanics problems, the transient and
harmonic response of the FE models up to a dimension of 300 000 can be
well approximated by a reduced model of a dimension of less than 30.
mor4ansys is designed to work with ANSYS but it can be employed for any
finite element package as well. First, it can read the high dimensional
system matrices in Market Matrix format. Second, you can plug another
FE package at the code level. I believe that this should not be too
difficult provided you have access to system matrices. Please contact
me if you have problems.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Scale-space techniques and methods based on partial differential
equations (PDEs) have become widely used tools in image processing
and computer vision.
They include a variety of methods such as linear scale-spaces,
nonlinear diffusion filtering, geometric flows, adaptive scalable
kernels, level set methods, variational techniques, and continuous-
scale morphology.
This conference deals with all aspects of these techniques, including
- theoretical foundations
(axiomatic foundations, well-posedness, differential-geometric aspects,
relations to other multiscale paradigms, biological relevance),
- discrete and numerical aspects
(discrete theories, efficient numerical methods),
- applications in image processing and computer vision
(image restoration, shape analysis, grouping, segmentation,
motion, stereo, registration)
- applications in other fields
(biomedical applications, industrial inspection, security).
It is the fifth conference in a series of successful biannual meetings
held in Utrecht, Corfu, Vancouver and Skye.
It will take place in a little castle (Schloesschen Schoenburg) in a
scenic place near the small town of Hofgeismar, Germany. The conference
is sponsored by the German Pattern Recognition Society (DAGM).
It is planned to publish the proceedings in the Springer Lecture
Notes in Computer Science Series. Selected papers will appear in
a special issue of the International Journal of Computer Vision.
Prospective authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts of not
more than 12 pages in Springer LNCS format by October 1, 2004.

Aims:
The Conference focuses on various aspects of mathematical
modelling and usage of finite difference and finite element
methods for numerical solution of modern problems of

Another very important goal of the MMA and CMAM meetings is
to assist the creation and maintenance of contacts between scientists from
the West and the East. Working language of the Conference is English.

Application of numerical methods to engineering problems;
Analysis of ODE and PDE problems and applications;

participants to organize minisymposiums. The format for a minisymposium

Workshop on Lie group methods and control theory
28 June to 1 July 2004, Edinburgh
The goal of this workshop is to provide a platform for
interaction between international leading researchers, combining
theorists at the forefront of geometric integration with those at
the leading edge in the theory of geometric control.
Invited participants include specialists in the application
and use of these techniques in robotics, mechanical control,
computer vision and optical motion capture.

Optimization plays a crucial role in the design of industrial
processes, due to the desire to save valuable resources, meet
ambitious production goals, and achieve the best possible profit
margins. Often the processes under consideration are nonlinear and
dynamic by nature, and complex dynamic optimization or optimal control
problems need to be formulated and solved. Recent years have seen
rapid progress in this area, both algorithmically and in terms of
solvable applications.
The aim of the workshop is to give a tutorial introduction into
state-of-the-art techniques for the solution of nonlinear optimal
control problems. We also discuss recent application examples from
academia and industry to illustrate the practical potential of current
dynamic optimization algorithms.

Subject: Postdoctoral Position at INRIA-Rocquencourt
INRIA-Rocquencourt has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to work on
the modeling and numerical simulations of specific heart diseases (such
as ichaemia), using a computational mechanics model of cardiac behavior.
The ultimate objective is to provide cardiologists with a decisional
tool to investigate the impact of certain treatments (surgical
procedure, pacemaker implantation...) on an impaired organ. Hence the
work will be carried out in a collaborative environment including
medical doctors.
Duration: 9-12 months
Location: INRIA-Rocquencourt (Paris area)
Applicants should have a PhD in numerical analysis or computational
mechanics (non-linear solid mechanics more particularly relevant), and a
strong motivation for biomedical applications. Non-French candidates
from the European Union (and associated states), no more than 30 years
old, are particularly encouraged, although all top-level applications
will definitely be considered.

Ph.D. studentship in numerical analysis and its applications in inverse problems
Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship in the areas of numerical
analysis and inverse problems. The candidate is expected to conduct research
on the numerical aspects of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT, also known
as resistance imaging). Particular emphasis will be on the development and
application of subspace methods for the solution of structured nonlinear problem formulations. The remarkable stability properties of these methods will be
further studied based on the concept of principle angles.
