Subject: Oberwolfach Model Reduction Benchmark Collection

Dear colleagues,

I would like to inform you about Oberwolfach Model Reduction Benchmark
Collection at

http://www.imtek.uni-freiburg.de/simulation/benchmark/

Currently there are ten benchmarks describing the system of ordinary
differential equations of first and second order arising from thermal,
structural mechanics and CFD modeling suitable for linear, nonlinear
and parametric model reduction. The dimension of dynamic systems varies
from 50 to 70 000.

System matrices for linear models are written the Matrix Market format.
Nonlinear models are written in the Dynamic System Interchange Format
that is similar to the form of Matlab .m files.

If you have a dynamic system from your own practice, you are welcome to
submit it.

If you would like to receive announcements about new benchmarks, please
subscribe to the list at

Subject: Five Day Course on Scientific Programming with Fortran 95

I trust that some readers of NA-Digest may be interested in a course that
I run on Fortran 95 - such courses are becoming rare nowadays.

With the help of Prof. John Reid (author of "Fortran 95/2003 Explained")
and other colleagues, I am running a 5 day course "Scientific Programming
with Fortran 95" from Monday Oct 11th to Friday Oct 15th at Cranfield
University's Shrivenham Campus located between Swindon and Oxford in the UK.
The course forms part of our modular MSc programme and is aimed at science
and engineering graduates with perhaps little programming experience. The
course is based around and covers the material of Stephen Chapman's book
"Introduction to Fortran 90/95" with additional sessions on Numerical
Libraries and Software Tools. The course is delivered in a well-equipped
LINUX teaching laboratory by practical sessions interspersed with short
lectures. We still have a few places left on the course.

WORKSHOP On
``State -of-the Art Computational Methods and Software
for Computer-Aided Control Systems Design and Analysis"

at the
Second IFAC Symposium on System, Structure and Control,
Oaxaca, Mexico, December 7, 2004.

To be delivered by
Biswa Datta, Northern Illinois University,
DeKalb, Illinois, USA.
E-mail : dattab@math.niu.edu

Workshop Date, Venue and Time: December 7, 2004
Hotel Victoria, Oaxaca, Mexico.
9 AM - 5:30 PM ( with Lunch and Coffee Breaks).

ABSTRACT: This one-day workshop is designed to give a complete overview of
of the state-of-the-art computational methods and the associated
software for control systems design and analysis.

The lectures will be organized to clearly explain the algorithms in a
manner that is suitable for easy implementations on computers, the
important aspects of implementations will be clearly discussed, a clear
and concise comparative study of one algorithms over the others for a
given problem will be presented and recommendations, based on that study,
will be made for the practicing engineers. Mathematical and computational
jargon that seem to be distractive for most engineers to learn these
techniques will be avoided. The minimal amount of numerical linear algebra
background that are absolutely essential to understand the material will be
presented in the course itself in a conceptual way, but giving the details
of software and implementational issues.

The graduate students and researchers in control and systems, and practicing
control and systems engineers and applied scientists working on a wide variety
of control applications, including aerospace, automotive, biology, medicine,
space-sciences, structural and manufacturing engineering, robotics, power
systems and many others will benefit by the workshop. The course will also
be of interests to applied and computational mathematicians and other
scientists desirous of learning of how linear algebra problems arise in
control systems design and analysis and are solved using sophisticated
techniques of numerical linear algebra.

The details of the workshop, including a tentative schedule can be found in

CALL FOR PAPERS

TOPICS

Formal proof assistants are used to guarantee the correctness of
simple algorithms and programs in computer arithmetic and soon in
numerical analysis. This session is intended to bring together
researchers interested in mechanically proving properties of floating
point operators and numerical algorithms. It will also foster the
development of floating point and other arithmetic packages for proof
assistants. It will finally present applications and introduce
challenging problems and perspectives for the future.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Certifications of floating point operators
Ensuring properties of numerical algorithms
Formalizations of IEEE 754/854 and IEC 559 standards
Identification of future key applications

HISTORY

A first meeting was held in Lyon, France, in 2000, funded by INRIA's
ARC AOC. The workshop was a success bringing together specialists
that usually present their results to separate communities.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Economics at the University of Ulm invites
applications for a

Professorship in Numerical Analysis (C3/W3)

to commence in October, 2005.

Candidates are expected to have an excellent research record in Numerical
Analysis and to be able to both contribute to the research activities within the
Mathematics group and to strengthen the interdisciplinary research activities
within the University. We expect that the applicant contributes to the research
profile of the Faculty in Applied Mathematics in Industry and Economics as well
as in Analysis - in particular Partial Differential Equations.

Of particular interest are applicants with strong analytic skills preferably in
one of the areas: Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations,
Numerical Optimisation, respectively Numerical Optimal Control with applications
in Economics, Engineering and/or Natural Sciences.

Furthermore it is expected that the successful applicant contributes to the
planned Centre for Scientific Computing.

Candidates will take part in teaching and supervision at all levels for students
of the Faculty of Mathematics and Economics and also in teaching Mathematics to
students of other Faculties of the University of Ulm.

Applicants must possess a university degree, a Ph. D., and a habilitation or an
equivalent scientific achievment.

The position is an established (permanent) Professorship. However, in case of a
first appointment the employment is initially temporary. Exceptions may be made
for applications from abroad or from outside academia. No new application
process is required if it is decided to continue the employment permanently
after the initial contract.

The University of Ulm is committed to increase the percentage of women in
research and teaching. We therefore particularly encourage female scientists to
apply.

Applications with the usual documents (including reprints of the five most
important publications) should be submitted no later than November 8, 2004 to
the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Economics, University of Ulm, D-89069
Ulm (Phone ++49 731 50-23500, Telefax ++49 731 50-23610). For further
information on our Faculty consult our homepage: www.mathematik.uni-ulm.de.

Applications from equally qualified physically disabled candidates will be
considered with priority.
