Subject: Eigentest: Test matrices for large-scale eigenproblems
Che Rung Lee I have written a package Eigentest that produces real
test matrices with known eigensystems. A test matrix, called an
eigenmat, is generated in a factored form, in which the user can
specify the eigenvalues and has some control over the condition of the
eigenvalues and eigenvectors. An eigenmat A of order n requires only
O(n) storage for its representation. Auxiliary programs permit the
computation of
(A - s*I)*b, (A - s*I)'*b, inv(A - s*I)*b, and inv(A - s*I)'*b
in O(n) operations. A special routine computes specified eigenvectors
of an eigenmat and the condition of its eigenvalues. Thus eigenmats
are suitable for testing algorithms based on Krylov sequences, as well
as others based on matrix vector products. The package contains
implementations in Fortran 77, Fortran 95, C, and Matlab.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - SIAM Student Paper Prize - DEADLINE APPROACHING
The 2006 SIAM STUDENT PAPER PRIZE will be presented at the 2006 SIAM
Annual Meeting to be held July 10-14, 2006, in Boston, Massachusetts.
The prize is awarded every year to the student author(s) of the most
outstanding paper(s) submitted to the SIAM Student Paper Competition.
Up to three papers will be selected. This award is based solely on the
merit and content of the student's contribution to the submitted paper.
The purpose of the prize is to recognize outstanding scholarship by
students in applied mathematics or scientific computing.
Each prize recipient shall receive a framed certificate and a cash award
of $1,000. Each recipient is required to present his or her paper at
the 2006 SIAM Annual Meeting. Recipients also receive $500 toward
travel expenses and gratis registration for the meeting.
Eligibility is restricted to students in good standing who do not yet
hold the degree of PhD on the application deadline, February 15, 2006.
Papers entered in the competition must have already been submitted for
publication. Submissions may be based on co-authored papers.

The Second Conference on Computational and Mathematical Population Dynamics
(CMPD2) will take place in Campinas, Brazil, from July 16 to 20, 2007. This
Conference is the second joint meeting of the Conference on Mathematical
Population Dynamics (MPD) and the Conference on Deterministic and Stochastic
Models for Biological Interactions (DeStoBio), with a 20-year history of
international meetings with ever-increasing participation. As in the previous
conferences from both series, aim of the meeting is to bring together people
from different fields (applied mathematicians, statisticians, engineers,
computer scientists, biologists, clinicians, epidemiologists, biomedical
scientists, ecologists...) interested in (deterministic and/or stochastic)
models for population dynamics and interactions.
Population dynamics here is intended in a very wide sense, including
everything from populations of animals and plants, to populations of cells or
molecules. Hence, topics of the conference will include ecology (including
epidemic spread), cell population dynamics (including immunology, tumor
growth) and molecular biology (including molecular evolution and genetics,
genomics). The meeting will focus on modeling of quantitative data in these
fields, analysis of models, and their applications.
There will be approximately 12 plenary lectures and several parallel
sessions organized by thematic interest.

of Alberta. The project involves exploration of nanofabricated
microfibers for pharmaceutical applications and the numerical simulation
of the flow of such fibres in the human airways. The responsibilities
of the postdoctoral fellow will include the development of an existing
finite element code (in C) for particulate flows of spherical particles,
towards nonspherical particles and using it for the numerical simulation
of the flow of single and multiple particles of various shapes in a
model of the human airways. The code is based on the fictitious domain
approach. The candidate should have a PhD degree in Applied
Mathematics or Engineering and be familiar with the finite element
method and its application to fluid flow. It would be a definite plus
if he has experience with the fictitious domain approach for particulate
flow.
