Subject: CSparse: software for upcoming book on sparse direct methods
I would like to announce the release of a sparse matrix package,
CSparse, that I've written for my upcoming book, "Direct Methods
for Sparse Linear Systems," to appear in SIAM's Series on the
Fundamentals of Algorithms sometime this year.
It demonstrates a wide range of sparse matrix algorithms in as
concise a code as possible (sparse LU with partial pivoting is
only 165 lines, for example, not including the fill-reducing
ordering). The algorithms are asymptotically optimal (in most
cases), and have comparable performance with existing methods
(with exception of the sparse LU, Cholesky, and QR factorizations).
One section of the book provides an overview of a wide range of
available software for sparse direct methods, with links to
high-performance sparse LU, Cholesky, and QR factorization codes:

A MATLAB interface is included (including a pretty color "spy",
and an easy MATLAB interface to the UF Sparse Matrix Collection).

Aim and Scope: The study of phenomena of the real world, in recent years, is
carried on through a mathematical simulation which captures their behaviour,
characteristics and properties. If, during its evolution, the phenomena show a
dependency on the previous history, then the mathematical models which best
simulate the phenomena are Integral Equations, whose ereditary character makes
difficult both the theoretical study and the resolution process. In
particular, Volterra Integral Equations appear in the study of many phenomena
which are important in applied sciences, such as population dynamics,
diffusion of an epidemic, neural networks, and so on. For most of these
models, it is important to develop both new efficient numerical methods, and
mathematical software to obtain numerical solutions for the comprehension of
the phenomena during its evolution in time, and to collect informations on the

discuss ideas, theories and applications.

Subject: PhD position (Numerical analysis) near Marseille (France)
The French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) is
looking for a PhD student. The research will be related to numerical
simulations of fires in confined rooms.
The flows of such fires are modelled in an already existing code as turbulent
reactive flows and their dynamics are treated by an asymptotic model, valid
for low Mach numbers. The mass balance equation and the equation of motion
that govern the flow are strongly coupled to balance equations of convection-
diffusion-reaction type for energy, chemical species, turbulent energy
density.
The numerical scheme of the existing CFD code involves a non-conforming FE
approximation for the equations of motion and mass balance together with a FV
approximation of all other balance equations. The choice of FV approximations
allow to fulfill a discrete maximum principle for the transported quantities.
The aim of this PhD thesis is to investigate Galerkin-based alternatives of
the FV approximation of the transport equations to reach higher order
discretizations and to take advantage of current developments related to mesh
refinement and multigrid preconditioners. The proposed schemes will have to
fulfill stability and positivity constraints. The alternatives that will be
considered are the internal penalty method, the subgrid viscosity method and
the DG method.
The student will obtain a PhD in mathematics from the University of Provence
(Marseille) and will be based at the IRSN research center located near
Marseille. He will obtain funding for 3 years (IRSN public grant of about
16,500 euros p.a. subject to taxation). A suitable background is a MSc degree
in Applied Mathematics. The applicant should also have programming skills in

The Institute for Applied Mathematics (Prof. Dr. Peter Knabner) of the
Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Department of
Hydrogeology of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena (Prof. Dr. Kai Uwe
Totsche) are offering a
Ph.D. Position
in the framework of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the DFG
(Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).
The subject entitled "The Influence of Colloids on Water Flow and Solute
Transport in Soils: Detail or Key Process?" deals firstly with modelling the
interaction of carrier substances and the fluid, adsorbate and solutes, in
connection with its numerical solution and software development in the context
of the simulation of reactive transport processes in porous media.
The models consist of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations.
The candidate should be able to work and communicate within a team and
accomplish independently parts of the project. The work should lead to a Ph.D.
degree in the field of numerical mathematics/scientific computing or
mathematical modelling.
Candidates should have a degree (MSc-level or equivalent) in the areas of geo
sciences, physics, or applied / computational mathematics, or a similar area
with a profound knowledge of mathematical modelling. Fluency in either German or
English is required.
