Subject: P-IFISS: Potential Incompressible Flow Software
We are pleased to announce the availability of P-IFISS:
Potential Incompressible Flow & Iterative Solver Software (PIFISS) Version 1.0.
This is an open-source Matlab software package that supplements the previously
released IFISS software described in:
Howard Elman, Alison Ramage and David Silvester, IFISS: a Matlab toolbox for
modelling incompressible flow, http://eprints.ma.man.ac.uk/125/
The new PIFISS software extends the functionality of IFISS to primal and mixed
formulations of two-dimensional steady-state diffusion problems with
discontinuous and anisotropic coefficients. The package offers users the
possibility to investigate different iterative solution techniques for the
symmetric positive definite problems that arise in the primal formulation and
for the saddle-point systems that arise in the mixed formulation. In
particular, we include state of the art preconditioning techniques based on
algebraic multigrid.
Key features of the package include:
- implementation of finite element schemes, including lowest-order
Raviart-Thomas approximation for mixed test problems
- a posteriori error estimation for primal test problems
- a range of preconditioned Krylov subspace solvers
- an algebraic multigrid solver (new stand-alone code)
The software can be run under Windows, Unix and Mac architectures. Users also
require access to the functionality of FEMLAB or its successor COMSOL
Multiphysics. It is free software which can be redistributed and/or modified
under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License. The code and user
guide can be downloaded from: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/ifiss/pifiss.html

Your account is certainly correct, as would one about the ongoing
development of other languages. However, I have no interest in debating
whether "my programming language" is better than "your programming
language". I am not a computer scientist, wasn't born in 1966, and looked
at Fortran code last in 2007.
The purpose of the emails Tim Davis and I sent to the list was to
illustrate what languages people choose for their projects, for a
multitude of often personal reasons. The result of these compilations is
that people vote with their feet: they walk away from Fortran and move to
C, C++, and Java.
Only very few new projects are written in Fortran. The language is almost
never used outside academia, the national labs and similar institutions,
and is pretty much extinct where most of our graduates will go, i.e. in
areas outside scientific computing. One may consider this a mistake, if
one prefers Fortran. I wish not to engage in a debate on this. I only
intended to provide a small statistical sample.
With best regards
Wolfgang Bangerth

Subject: Fortran in teaching students to implement numerical analysis
I have found the discussion on Fortran in teaching students
to implement numerical analysis, by Dr.Van Snyder of NASA,
quite fascinating. We also use Fortran 90 at WPI's unix system
in our courses in finite elements and matrix structural analysis.
We ask our students to develop modular subroutines, to solve
nonlinear equations, and differential equations, and also in
optimization problems.
We have found that they are better than using some Matlab routines
which are simplified. System of nonlinear equations and
optimization problems in structural design, are better implemented
in Fortran. C has large overheads. Like Van Snyder said, C is in
a maintenance type mode.
We have our own Fortran subroutines, which we wrote over a few
years. Students add to this library. They are simply used with
a main program. These are used in eigenvalue problems, and
in numerical integration and nonlinear analysis and optimization
of structural systems, such as aircrafts and tall buildings.
f90 -o main main.f -lanswer
where answer.f is our libraray of routines. main.f is the main
program with arrays and files opened. f77 and f90 are free in
our unix system.

Subject: New book, Numerical Techniques for Chemical and Biological Engineers
We announce a new text and research book on modeling and numerical solutions
for chemical and biological engineering problems.
All reactive chemical and biological processes are highly nonlinear, caused
in part by the exponential Arrhenius dependence of reactions and also by the
bell shaped dependence of biological reactions upon pH, in addition to
nonmonotonic kinetics. Therefore these processes generally exhibit multiple
steady states. These differ greatly in their stability and utility properties.
Specifically for na-netters, many of the numercial problems of this area are
new and currently well established NA techniques do not work well, if at all.
Newton or other standard root finding methods often simply fail to find
multiple solutions for parametrized transcendental equations. The DE systems
that derive from the exponential reaction equations are mostly stiff and even
doubly stiff. This strains the generally successful ODE solvers that are used
for mechanical and electrical engineering problems. In search direction
finders inside collocation or shooting methods for DEs, the Jacobi matrices
often turn out to be singular. Etc. These numerical difficulties show a need
for new approaches from NA practitioners. The book introduces a multitude of
first new solution methods for subject specific numerical problems in chemical
and biological engineering in the form of adaptive MATLAB codes.

well-established mechanisms for providing user-friendly access to
computational resources.
This workshop:
- is focused on effective models, methodologies and efficient algorithms
to select and use grid
resources, accessing the grid services by means of interfaces hiding
to the final user complicated
and boring details;
- is aimed to be a forum within which to discuss current achievements
and trends in the area of grid
middleware models, algorithms and methodologies.
Paper Submission and Publication
- The rules of the PPAM conference apply. In particular:
- Papers will be refereed and accepted on the basis of their scientific
merit and relevance to
the Workshop topics.
- Papers presented at the Workshop will be included into the proceedings
and published after the
conference by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS series.

control of biological and biologically inspired systems. This program will be
sponsored by the National Science Foundation REU (Research Experiences for
Undergraduates) and the Department of Defense ASSURE (Awards to Stimulate and
Support Undergraduate Research Education). This 8-week summer research
experience is scheduled to be held between June 04, 2007 to July 27, 2007 and
it will support eight-ten undergraduate students and a K-12 teacher. The
proposed REU program will consist of interesting and challenging projects
arising from computational modeling, systems & control, geometric modeling,
and applications of complex analytic methods.
Applicants must be undergraduate students who will be completing their junior
or senior year by June 2007. Every selected student participant will be
provided a stipend of $2,400, free on-campus housing and meals, and a travel
allowance up to $500. Students with a strong background in advanced calculus,
linear algebra and differential equations are eligible to apply. Women and
underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Please note
that under NSF rules, only U.S. Citizens and permanent residents are eligible
to receive stipends and support for housing and travel costs. For more details
on the program and application details, go to the program website:

Subject: U.S.-Hong Kong REU in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing
The Mathematical and Computer Sciences Department at Colorado School of
Mines invites applications for an international REU program to be held
in Hong Kong, May 28, 2007-July 20, 2007. The program will be centered
at Hong Kong Baptist University and administered by Colorado School of
Mines. It will focus on numerical analysis and scientific computing
with applications in applied science and engineering. Ten undergraduates
who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents will be selected to
participate in the program. They will spend eight weeks working on
research projects under the direction of faculty members at Hong Kong
Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong and the Chinese
University of Hong Kong. Each participant will receive a stipend of
$2500, plus travel and a subsistence allowance. Accommodation will be
provided at Hong Kong Baptist University. Applications should be
submitted by February 19, 2007, for full consideration. More details
can be found at http://www.mines.edu/reu-mcs
