Subject: Predictions inspired by Stanford 50
The Stanford 50 meeting was held March 29-31, 2007, a period on the
calendar close to either one of the two days, February 28 or March 1, that
Gene Golub, born on February 29, could claim as a birthday.
Numeral 50 refers to the appointment fifty years ago of George Forsythe as
Professor of Mathematics at Stanford, an auspicious step and a part of
bringing the Bold Rush to Stanford and Silicon Valley similar to the Gold
Rush of 1849 and its influence on the future of San Francisco. The look
backward at historic figures and institutions is in one direction, with the
future deserving attention also.
Gene, a well known ambassador of matrix computations who will be on
sabbatical over the next six months, figures, so to speak, in certain of
the following top five predictions in numerical analysis for the year
2057:
5 Continuing agitation on the part of Droid construction workers further
delays the move of the Stanford physical plant from the swamp lands of
Silicon Valley, half to Central China and half to Northern India.
4 The development of nano-windmills, tiny windmill operated electric
generation devices, has brought embedded power generation and cooling to
the computer chip and done away with the familiar skein of electric high
voltage lines across the landscape.
3 All three major political parties adopted a platform plank on the
simmering issue known widely as: ``Annual 29,'' the goal of which is to
make Feb 29 a part of every year. (The ``Annual 29'' movement is
celebrating victory. The opposing March Firsters vow to take the fight to
the streets and the polling page.)
2 Gene Golub returned to his summer home in Tahoe from The Heinlein Octant
on Mars, Alpha Sector where he gave an invited talk on Computing
Eigenvalues in a Low Oxygen, Low Gravity Environment in a low oxygen, low
gravity environment.
1 Gene plans his sabbatical at the new Lowell Technical Institute in
distant Mars. The fact that the Martian calendar has room for Feb. 29 may
be a factor in the decision. Still under negotiation is whether the
duration is one Martian year or one Earth year.

Subject: Report from the 31st SANUM conference at Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch University hosted the 31st SANUM (South African Society
for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) conference. The beautiful and
old town of Stellenbosch is located only a few miles northeast of Cape
Town. It is world-famous for its wines.
Excellent wines have been served at a reception in the picturesque
Botanical Garden and at the conference dinner celebrating the 60th
birthdays of Johan de Villiers and Carl Rohwer.
The conference has been organised by Karin Hunter, Ben Herbst and
J. A. C. Weideman. They have done an excellent job and managed to
attract a variety of international and national speakers. The audience
was composed of people coming from at least 20 nations and by a large
number of students studying at the nearby African Institute of
Mathematics (AIMS).
Richard J. Brown opened the conference with a talk describing the
challenges of modelling blink cycles of the human tear film. Daya
Reddy and Ruediger Weiner discussed numerical aspects of variational
inequalities and ordinary differential equations.
The second day was dedicated to two rather distinct areas. Topics in
approximation theory were covered by Armin Iske and Carl
Rohwer. Pierre Adler and Beric Skews addressed mathematical problems
associated with porous media.
On the last day Paul Milewski spoke about solitary waves in free
surface flows and linked surprisingly tsunamis and insect wakes. Kevin
Burrage addressed the modelling of biochemical systems by stochastic
simulations and spoke about the numerical challenges we face
there. Two graduate students spoke about high order finite element
methods and the fast summation of slow convergent series.

HIM Junior Hausdorff Semester Program
Computational Mathematics
February - April 2008
A Junior Hausdorff Semester Program (Junior HSP) gives young scientists
(PostDocs, Junior Faculty) the chance to spend a period of 3 months at
HIM in Bonn to carry out collaborative research in small groups of at
least 4 researchers. The organization of up to two workshops during this
period is encouraged. There will be the possibility to invite further
participants from outside and senior scientists for talks or a mini course.
We look for applications from groups of scientists who intend to collaborate
on a project within the area of Computational Mathematics. The Program has
a capacity of about 20 positions, so that we can have several smaller groups
within Computational Mathematics at the same time. Interaction between these
groups is expected to be very fruitful. The stay in Bonn is fully financed
by HIM so that the participants can apply for leave from their home institution.
Groups of junior scientists interested in participating in this Junior HSP
should send their application together with the CV and the list of publications
of all participants to the address below. The decision will be made by an
external scientific advisory board.

Full grants are available (see below for eligibility criteria) for a
two-week summer school at the University of Cambridge on the development
and use of climate models.
The school will provide a solid foundation on the algorithms, numerical
methods and techniques suitable for the design and operation of modern
climate models and the analysis of their results. Elements of the dynamics
and physics of the climate system are an integral part of the school.
The schedule includes lectures, daily hands-on computing practical
sessions and seminars from practitioners.
It is highly recommended for early-career scientists (advanced Ph.D. and/or
post-docs) who are interested to pursue research in climate modelling.
