Subject: LaTeX Users - LyX Release 1.5.1 Available

For those unfamiliar with LyX, it is a fully featured, open source software
package for generating LaTeX based documents. It is an interactive software
system that is ideally suited to the generation of documents requiring
typsetting features, particularly math/scientific papers/books. A
comprehensive document properties option allows the user to specify:
margins, math styles, indentations, etc. Equations of any complexity are
edited graphically and the user can preview instantly or in a variety of
formats including PDF. LaTeX style sheets are supported including those
available for many journals. LyX is intuitively easy to use and is a very
useful software product for all those who generate scientific papers/books
of any type and size. LyX also has native BibTeX support for bibliographies.
When completed, the final document can be output in a variety of formats
including: LaTeX, PDF, HTML. Comprehensive user manuals are included with
the package.

We started to use Lyx approximately six months ago and now regard it as an
indispensable document processing tool. We have no connection with the LyX
system, other than as happy users.

rbMIT (C) MIT Software at http://augustine.mit.edu

We have recently released a new version of "rbMIT (C) MIT(*) Software"
package for rapid and reliable prediction of engineering outputs
associated with parametrized partial differential equations. The
software is particularly well--suited to the many--query and real-time
contexts.

The rbMIT (C) MIT Software package is intended to serve both (as Matlab(R)
source) "Developers" - numerical analysts and computational tool-builders -
who wish to further develop the methodology; and (as Matlab(R) "executables")
"Users" - computational engineers and educators - who wish to rapidly apply
the methodology to new applications. Requirements are (i) some but not
extensive knowledge of both FE methods and RB methods, (ii) Matlab Version 6.5
or newer on some reasonably fast platform, (iii) the Matlab(R) symbolic, pde,
and optimization toolkits, and (iv) agreement to rbMIT (C) MIT usage,
distribution, and citation terms and conditions upon download.

The rbMIT Software and associated documentation for elliptic and parabolic
problems can be downloaded at http://augustine.mit.edu. A collection of 36
model problems is also provided to illustrate various capabilities of the
software and to allow "learning by example."

Subject: AIM Workshops Call for Proposals

AIM, the American Institute of Mathematics, is one of the seven
NSF-funded mathematics research institutes in the US. Located in
Palo Alto, California, AIM has been hosting fully-funded, week-long
workshops in all areas of the mathematical sciences since 2002.

Being relatively new, we would like to introduce you to our
programs and research opportunities:

1. AIM, through its conference center, ARCC, runs focused workshops
for groups of 32 mathematicians with the goal of establishing
productive and lasting collaborations. We especially encourage
participation from junior mathematicians, women, under-represented
minorities, and mathematicians from primarily undergraduate
institutions. To this end, each of our workshops reserves eight
spots for open application (the other 24 spots are nominated by
the organizers). All 32 participants receive full funding to
attend the week-long workshop.

A list of upcoming workshops for which applications are sought
can be found at:
http://www.aimath.org/research

2. We also encourage proposals for new workshops. The deadline is
Nov 1, 2007 for workshops that begin after June, 2008. We are happy
to offer assistance in all aspects of the proposal preparation.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The 2008 Spring Simulation Multiconference will feature the High
Performance Computing and Simulation Symposium (HPCS 2008), the 16th
special symposium devoted to the impact of high performance computing
and communications on computer simulations.

Advances in networking, high-end computers, large data stores, and
middleware capabilities are ushering in a new era of high-performance
parallel and distributed simulations. Along with these new
capabilities come new challenges in computing and system modeling. The
goal of HPCS 2008 is to encourage innovation in high performance
computing and communication technologies and to promote synergistic
advances in modeling methodologies and simulation. It will promote the
exchange of ideas and information between universities, industry, and
national laboratories about new developments in system modeling, high
performance computing and communication, and scientific computing and
simulation.

Subject: Workshop on Discontinuous Galerkin and its Applications, Oct 2007

ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON THE DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN METHOD AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Wednesday 31st October 2007
University of Reading, UK
Originally proposed in the 1970s for the solution of the neutron
transport equation, the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element
method has been developed and applied in a range of application areas. A
distinctive feature of the method is the use of a discontinuous
representation of the variables. The DG method combines the flexibility
of finite element methods with the power of the non-linear flux function
used in finite volume approximation of hyperbolic conservation laws.
Other attractive features of the method are the ability to easily extend
to high order accuracy on complex geometries and its non-linear
stability.

This workshop, as well as introducing the method will present its use in
a number of application areas. The workshop is suitable for both
academics and industrialists wishing to learn about or extend their
knowledge of DG and its potential applications.
Invited Speakers will include:

Ralf Hartmann (DLR, Germany)
DG methods for aerodynamic flow simulations
Paul Houston (University of Nottingham)
Anisotropic hp-Adaptive Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods
Spencer Sherwin (Imperial College)
Discontinuous Galerkin Methods using Spectral/hp element
discretisations: Why and when is it useful to apply DG
Endre Suli (Oxford University)
Discontinuous Galerkin finite element approximation of nonlinear elastic
waves
Jaap van der Vegt (University of Twente, The Netherlands)
Space-Time Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Compressible Flows

The workshop is organised by the Institute of Computational Fluid
Dynamics (ICFD). Please see www.icfd.reading.ac.uk for registration details.

a small number of permanent BC Leadership Chairs at public post-secondary
institutions. These endowed BC Leadership Chairs are designed to attract
world-class faculty, strengthen the province’s capacity for innovative
research, promote British Columbia as a centre for cutting-edge research,
enhance economic development and position the province as a leader in the
knowledge-based economy. The Faculty of Applied Sciences at Simon Fraser
University has been awarded one of these endowed Chairs and invites
applications for this Leadership Chair in Medical Imaging as part of an
initiative to further develop Medical Imaging Science within the Faculty of
Applied Sciences. The recruited individual will hold a joint-position at the
rank of Professor in Computing Science, Engineering Science and/or Kinesiology
and is expected to lead an emerging area of strength within the Faculty. We
seek to attract an internationally recognized expert in Medical Imaging who
will bring extensive expertise to SFU in minimally one of the following areas:
biomedicine, medical image acquisition, medical image analysis, computer
vision, visualization, and applied mathematics. The goal as Chair will be to
provide a focus for regional research efforts in these areas and facilitate
collaboration with health researchers across the campus, local hospitals, and
the provincial biomedical imaging sector.
The candidate is expected to unite those directly involved in researching the
entire medical imaging process, including the imaging physics and chemistry,
the computational image analysis and its application, the study of the
biomedical aspects of disease, with a particular focus on cardiac defects and
stroke, and the challenges of assisting diagnosis and communicating medical
imaging results across networks of health care professionals and hospitals.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and
permanent residents will be given priority. Applications will be accepted
until the position is filled but applicants are encouraged to apply by
November 15, 2007.
