Subject: David Gottlieb passed away

It fills me with sadness to have to inform you of the death of
David Gottlieb, Ford Foundation Professor of Applied Mathematics,
on December 6, 2008.

David Gottlieb was born in Tel Aviv on the 14th of November in 1944, and
received B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Tel Aviv University during
1967-1972. He worked at MIT, NASA Langley Research Center and then for
many years at Tel Aviv University. He came to the Division of Applied
Mathematics at Brown in 1985, with the task of developing what would
become a very successful program in numerical analysis and scientific
computation for partial differential equations.

Widely known for a very broad range of contributions distributed over 125
scientific articles and 2 books, he was best known for his fundamental
contributions to the development of high order and spectral methods
for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. He was
one of the founders of the International Conference on Spectral and
High-Order Methods (ICOSAHOM) which remains the premier international
conference in this area of research, drawing attendees from every
corner of the world.

Among many his honors were honorary degrees from the University of
Paris VI and the University of Uppsala, memberships in the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences,
and designation as the John von Neumann Lecturer by the Society for
Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2008.

While his scientific influence and impact is undisputed, his ability to
touch the people around him with his kindness, his insightfulness, his
generosity, and his grace has left an eternal mark on all who were fortunate
enough to know him. His courage in fighting his illness will serve as an
inspiration to all of us when facing hardship in our lives.

To allow the very large community of friends and colleagues to share
thoughts, anecdotes, stories with his familiy and the community
we have set up a blog which we invite you to visit at

https://wiki.brown.edu/confluence/display/appmath/David+Gottlieb

Please help to make this an appropriate tribute to the scientist and
human being that has meant so much to so many of us.

Subject: Special Issue, J. Scientific Computing, in memory of David Gottlieb

For the momory of Professor David Gottlieb, who has made fundamental
contribution to many areas of numerical analysis and scientific
computing, including spectral methods, high order finite difference
methods, absorbing boundary conditions, and applications in CFD
and electro-magnetism, etc., we would like to organize a special
issue in Journal of Scientific Computing (http://www.springer.com/10915).
This issue will contain papers in the broad subject of scientific
computing, including papers in algorithm design, analysis, and
applications, emphasizing the areas that David has worked on and
has made fundamental contributions. The Journal of Scientific
Computing is a suitable venue for such a special issue, as David
Gottlieb has been heavily involved in the editorial work of this
journal since its start.

For planning purpose, please email shu@dam.brown.edu before
January 15, 2009 if you plan to submit a paper to this special issue.
The deadline for submission will be June 1, 2009 and we expect to
publish it in 2010. All papers will undergo the normal refereeing
process, the same as that for regular JSC manuscripts. Manuscripts
should be submitted on line at the journal web site, clicking
"special issue in memory of David Gottlieb" for article category.

Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Vision and Perception, Robotics, and
Bio-Informatics (this list is not exhaustive). KAUST is also interested in
applicants doing research at the interface of Computer Science and Applied
Mathematics with other science and engineering disciplines. High priority will
be given to the overall originality and promise of the candidate’s work rather
than the candidate’s sub-area of specialization within Applied Mathematics and
Computer Science.
An earned Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational
Mathematics, Computational Science and Engineering, Operations Research,
Statistics, or a related field, evidence of the ability to pursue a program of
research, and a strong commitment to graduate teaching are required. A
successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at the graduate level
and to build and lead a team of graduate students in Master’s and Ph.D. research.
Applications should include a curriculum vita, brief statements of research
and teaching interests, and the names of at least 3 references for an
Assistant Professor position, 6 references for an Associate Professor
position, and 9 references for a Full Professor position. Candidates are
requested to ask references to send their letters directly to the search
committee. Applications and letters should be sent via electronic mail to
kaust-search@cs.stanford.edu. The review of applications will begin
immediately, and applicants are strongly encouraged to submit applications as
soon as possible; however, applications will continue to be accepted until
December 2009, or all 10 available positions have been filled.
In 2008 and 2009, as part of an Academic Excellence Alliance agreement between
KAUST and Stanford University, the KAUST faculty search committee consisting
of professors from the Computer Science Department and the Institute of
Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University, will
evaluate applicants for the faculty positions at KAUST. However, KAUST will be
responsible for all hiring decisions, appointment offers, recruiting, and
explanations of employment benefits. The recruited faculty will be employed by
KAUST, not by Stanford. Faculty members in Applied Mathematics and Computer
Science recruited by KAUST before September 2009 will be hosted at Stanford
University as Visiting Fellows until KAUST opens in September 2009.

Opening for a PhD/Post-Doc position in Skeletal Muscle Modeling with
Applications to Lumbar Spine Mechanics

The PhD student/Post-Doc is supposed to work on a project focusing on
developing novel computational techniques to model skeletal muscles mechanics.
The goal is to overcome the computational challenge of realistically modeling
lumbar spine muscle mechanics while taking into account the influence of a
large number of muscles involved in complex upper body movements.
The skeletal muscles are modeled using the Finite Element method in three
dimensions and principles of nonlinear continuum mechanics. For this purpose,
a good background in computational continuum mechanics, the Finite Element
Method, and some programming skills are desirable.

The PhD position is within the designated salary bracket TV-L 13 and has a
limited tenure of three years with a possible extension. The PhD student will
be part of the Graduate School Simulation Technology of the Cluster of
Excellence EXC 310 Simulation Technology (SimTech) at Universitaet Stuttgart

Applications with the usual documents (CV, degree certificates, references,
publication list, letter of motivation) should be sent directly to Jun.-Prof.
Oliver Roehrle (roehrle (_AT) simtech.uni-stuttgart.de), Institute of Applied
Mechanics (CE), Pfaffenwaldring 7, 70569 Stuttgart, Germany. Applications will
be accepted until the position is filled.
