Subject: CFP: SIAP Special Issue on Math Modeling of Controlled Drug
Delivery
Call for Papers, SIAP Special Issue:
Controlled drug delivery has been attracting a great deal of attention
in the
medical community for years as an efficient way of providing treatment for a
wide class of diseases. The common principle on which various drug delivery
devices are based is mass transfer of the given drug towards particular
organs, in which either the mass transfer rate, or place, or both are
prescribed according to certain medical protocols. Much progress has been
achieved in the design and development of various controlled drug delivery
systems, and many people routinely take medicine designed for controlled
release. Mathematical modeling of drug delivery systems is very important
since a successful model can provide a better understanding of and a
quantitative description of the physical, chemical and biological processes
governing the performance of the systems. On the basis of this description,
better controlled drug delivery systems can be designed.
The goals of the Special Issue are twofold. First, we want to attract more
attention of applied mathematicians to this class of important mass transfer
and control problems. Second, we want practitioners to become more aware of
the mathematical results that can be useful.
We anticipate that the journal issue will begin with review papers
discussing
the present state of the medical and biological research in the area of
controlled drug delivery as well as mathematical challenges faced by
modeling
efforts. Several contributed papers will be included. Each paper will
have an
introduction that will make the paper understandable to an applied
mathematician who is not an expert in drug delivery.
Manuscript Submission:
The deadline for submission to the Special Issue is November 30, 2010. All
interested should submit a manuscript and cover letter in PDF format via
SIAP’s online submission site at http://siap.siam.org. Note the block
labeled
Special Section (just under the keywords block on your submission
screen) and
select “Special Issue on Mathematical Modeling of Controlled Drug Delivery”
from the dropdown box. Also be sure to note in the Manuscript Comment
text box
at the bottom of this page and in your cover letter that your work is
intended
for the Special Issue.
Guest editors for the Special Issue are Alexander Nepomnyashchy
(nepom@techunix.technion.ac.il) at Technion, Israel Institute of
Technology,
and Vladimir Volpert (v-volpert@northwestern.edu) at Northwestern
University.
Inquiries can be directed to either of the editors.

Subject: PhD position in Plasma Physics and Scientific Computing at TU
Denmark
Project: Adaptive Simulations of Nonlinear Structures in Magnetized Plasma
A PhD position (3 years) are available for joint research in Plasma
Physics and Scientific Computing, starting as soon as possible; no
later than October 1, 2010.
The purpose of the project is to conduct research in advanced
numerical methods for high- performance computations of magnetized
plasma in fusion power devices. The project initiates a unique
collaboration among the Plasma Physics group at Risř DTU, Scientific
Computing Section at DTU Informatics and DTU Mathematics, Technical
University of Denmark, Denmark. The collaborative effort reflects the
need for a multi-disciplinary approach towards mathematical modeling
of complex physical processes, which requires a strong interplay
between physics, scientific computing, and mathematics.
In plasmas, self-organization processes result in coherent structures
forming out of turbulence if the dynamics are mainly
two-dimensional. In magnetized plasmas this happens due to the strong
anisotropy in the dynamics parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic
field. Fusion machine (tokamak) operation is hindered by the
occurrence of such structures, bringing with them expulsions of energy
dangerous to the integrity of the material surfaces facing the hot
plasma. Since the dynamics of such events involves physical effects
occurring at very different spatial and temporal scales even the
computational power of the fastest supercomputers available today is
insufficient for straightforward first principles simulations. Only by
utilizing the special geometric structure of the problem in
conjunction with high-performance computing can we hope to model such
complex systems.
The PhD project will be devoted to finding, developing, and testing
strategies towards solving this problem. The focus will be on the use
of advanced numerical methods which support spatial and temporal
adaptivity for resolving local features in complex three-dimensional
geometries. The student will have an opportunity to conduct research
in high-order accuracy schemes and scalable parallel algorithms for
efficient solution of the relevant prototype problems. The project
includes the possibility of interaction with the international fusion
research effort.
Candidates should have a MSc in Engineering, Physics or Applied
Mathematics. She/he should have a strong background and interest in
mathematics and/or physics and be able to document skills in
scientific computing. Furthermore, good command of the English
language is essential.

links on the university's vacancy webpage:
