Subject: Call for Papers--The Journal of Mathematics in Industry
The Journal of Mathematics in Industry is a peer-reviewed open access
journal that brings together research on developments in mathematics for
industrial applications, including both methods and the computational
challenges they entail. Here, "industry" is understood as any activity of
economic and/or social value. As such, "mathematics in industry" concerns
the field as it actually improves industrial processes and helps to master
the major challenges presented by cost and ecological issues.
By publishing high-quality articles, it serves as an essential resource for
academic researchers and practitioners alike. At the same time, it provides
a common platform for scholars interested in precisely those types of
mathematics needed in concrete industrial applications, and articles
focusing on the interaction of academia and industry are preferred. In
terms
of theory, the journal seeks articles with demonstrable mathematical
developments motivated by problems of modern industry. With regard to
computational aspects, it publishes works introducing new methods and
algorithms that represent significant improvements on the existing state of
the art of modern numerical and simulations methods.
The journal is initiated and run by the European Consortium for Mathematics
in Industry (ECMI) in collaboration with Springer, and it is set up as a
global journal with a world-wide editorial board.
The journal welcomes proposals for special issues on carefully selected
topics, reflecting the trends of research and development in the broad area
of mathematics in industry. Insightful survey articles may also be
submitted
for publication by invitation.

Durham University, UK
Department of Mathematical Sciences
Reader/Lecturer in Applied Mathematics
Salary: 29853 GBP - 52347 GBP
Expiry date: Monday, 4th October 2010
The successful candidate will have an excellent research record in an area
of Applied Mathematics other than theoretical particle physics or general
relativity. Preference may be given to candidates with research interests
which mesh with existing ones in the department: continuum mechanics,
computational applied mathematics, partial differential equations,
mathematical biology/medicine, applied dynamical systems. He or she will
be expected to undertake and publish original research of the highest
level, to contribute to the research activities of the Applied Mathematics
research unit and of the department as a whole, and to undertake teaching
and administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Department of
Mathematical Sciences. For appointment as Reader candidates must have a
substantial record of excellent publications at internationally leading
level, experience with postgraduate supervision, and ideally substantial
teaching experience at University level. A record of successful
generation of external funding for research projects is highly desirable.
We would especially welcome applications from holders of research
fellowships.

Subject: Tenure Track Position in Biofilm Research (Leeds, UK)
Applications are requested for a Senior Research Fellowship in
theoretical/computational biofilm research. The Research Fellow will apply
computational analysis and modelling approaches to biofilms, working on
in-vivo and in-vitro data towards the development of preventive and
therapeutic strategies to combat biofilm infections. Initially working
closely
with the School of Dentistry in Leeds, computational/modelling approaches
developed with oral biofilms will be readily applicable to other biofilms of
relevance to human health and health technology. Anticipated collaborators
within the University of Leeds' modelling community include Computing
(Biosystems, machine vision, scientific computation,
Human-Computer-Interactions), Applied Mathematics (mathematical biology;
fluids), Physics (Polymers & Complex Fluids), Mechanical and Civil
Engineering
(medical engineering; pathogen control engineering).
This fellowship is available immediately for a period of five years with the
expectation of progressing to an established academic post subject to
satisfactory performance. The post provides the opportunity for researchers
with outstanding potential to establish an independent academic career.
Further details and the application procedure may be obtained from:
http://hr.leeds.ac.uk/jobs/ViewJob.aspx?m=all&JId=1344
The closing date for applications is September 15th 2010.
