INI/WIMCS Joint Follow-Up Meeting On Computational Challenges in PDEs
Swansea (UK), 4th-8th April 2011
The research programme on Computational Challenges for Partial Differential
Equations was held at the Isaac Newton Institute (INI) in Cambridge between
January and July in 2003. The programme resulted in important contributions
to the fields of adaptivity and error control, the construction and
mathematical analysis of multiscale numerical algorithms, the approximation
of high-dimensional PDEs and the mathematical analysis of numerical
algorithms for general PDEs.
Building on the success of this programme, the INI and the Wales Institute
of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (WIMCS) are jointly organising a
one week follow-up meeting in 2011. The meeting will consist of 32 invited
contributions in the areas of multiscale modelling, interface modelling,
PDEs on surfaces and geometric evolution problems, biomedical applications,
computational rheology, atomistic to continuum passage, low order modelling
and uncertainty modelling.

Reproducible Research: Tools and Strategies for Scientific Computing
is a workshop that will be held July 13-16, 2011 at the University of Briti=

Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. This is part of the Applied Mathematics
Perspectives joint conference taking place the week before ICIAM 2011.
The first (optional) day of the workshop will consist of a set of tutorials=
on
techniques -- such as version control -- that can improve reproducibility a=

the personal level: your ability to replicate your own results weeks, month=
s or
years later.
The middle two days will feature a talks by participants on technical and
non-technical aspects of scientific software development and dissemination.
The final day will feature a community forum on topics related to dissemina=
ting
reproducible research and in particular the roles that journals and funding
agencies can play.
The main workshop (first three days) has room for roughly 40 people, but we
have reserved space for people who apply to attend. In particular, we welc=
ome
applications from graduate students or postdoctoral fellows and from
under-represented groups in the mathematical sciences. Some funding may be
available from the NSF to help support participants from the US, particular=

in the above categories.

projects related to the problem area and to present research papers at the

Within the NWO-COMPLEXITY program the project PREdictability of KURoshio cu=
rrent
path transitionS(PREKURS) was recently funded. The Kuroshio current near t=
he
Japanese coast in the North Pacific Ocean undergoes decadal time scale
transitions between different paths. The aim of this project is to assess t=
he
predictability of these path transitions and to determine the effects of th=
e
large-scale (equivalent) barotropic instabilities, meso-scale eddies and
wind-stress variations on this predictability.
In the project we will use a combination of direct numerical simulation,
stochastic parameterization of the effects of meso-scale eddies, techniques=
from
the theory of random dynamical systems and data-assimilation methods to ana=
lyse
the flows in one- and two-layer shallow water models of the Kuroshio Curren=
t.
Ensemble methods will be used to investigate the predictability of the Kuro=
shio
path transitions, including a study of the impact of specific observations,=
in
deterministic and stochastic models. The postdoc in Groningen will concentr=
ate
on the stochastic parameterization of meso-scale eddies and the numerical
techniques to tackle the stochastic partial differential equations efficien=
tly.
Candidates should hold a PhD-degree in applied mathematics or physics; have=
a
good knowledge of numerical mathematics, especially for CFD; have good
programming skills; preferably have experience with stochastic analysis and
oceanography; have demonstrated a potential to carry out creative and

performance so that one can use the enhanced images for image-guided
surgery, make real-time adjustments etc. The imaging techniques needed incl=

image enhancement to improve the quality of ultrasound, MRI and CT images,
segmentation to extract interesting structures, and registering information
from several sources into a common coordinate system.
GPUs and embedded devices are now massive floating-point stream processors =

offer energy efficient compute power. Recent development of tools such as C=

and OpenCL has made it much easier to utilize the computational power these
systems offer.
This position will focus on developing a heterogeneous computing framework
that addresses HPC research issues such as performance modeling, analysis a=

optimization techniques for multi- and many-core CPU-GPU interactions,

The Department of Mathematics and the School of Energy Resources at the
University of Wyoming are recruiting several Ph.D. students to develop trul=

interdisciplinary research projects in Applied Mathematics. One research
effort is focused on uncertainty quantification for geologic carbon
sequestration. This project involves multi-scale modeling within a Bayesian
Monte Carlo Markov Chain framework for aquifer characterization. Another
research effort relates to the development of error estimations of various
multi-rate numerical methods as found in many applications such as simulati=
