Subject: Charles Broyden, 1933-2011
Our friend and collaborator Charles Broyden, 78 years old, has died
following a pair of strokes. Charles was a major figure in the
quasi-Newton developments of the 1960-70s. He was a physicist working
at English Electric when he decided to adapt the
Davidon-Fletcher-Powell ideas to apply to some nonlinear systems of
equations he had to solve. This research resulted in his classic 1965
Mathematics of Computation paper, which has been cited almost 1200
times. Later, he was one of the independent discoverers with Roger
Fletcher, Don Goldfarb, and Dave Shanno of the highly successful BFGS
hessian update. Thus, Charles had a hand in the 2 most successful
quasi-Newton update methods. Charles and the love of his life, Joan,
were good friends to all of us in the field, and we will miss him.

It is with great sadness that I have to report that Charles Broyden
passed away on Friday, May 20th, after a severe stroke and further
complications. He was 78. While he was at the University of Essex
(U.K.), he played a leading role in the development of the
world-famous Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) method which,
after more than 40 years, is still an industry standard method for
solving unconstrained optimization problems. After leaving Essex, he
continued an active research career in Holland and Italy, being
awarded a prestigious chair at the University of Bologna. In later
years, he shifted the focus of his research to numerical linear
algebra and, in particular, to conjugate gradient methods. His work
on the taxonomy of such methods will be well known to many. Charles
was a great friend and colleague to many workers in optimization and
linear algebra, and particularly championed the work of young,
up-and-coming researchers who might otherwise have struggled to obtain
recognition for their work. Charles leaves a wife, Joan, and three
children - Chris, Jane and Nick - to whom we send our sincere
condolences.

initiated a multi-year faculty recruitment program, aimed at
attracting faculty members, including both senior academic leaders and
promising young researchers.
Candidates will be considered at all ranks, and in all major fields of
modern applied and pure mathematics, but preference will be given to
Computational Mathematics, Probability & Statistics, and Actuarial
Science. Chair Professorships are also available to senior
mathematicians with well-established academic credentials. Salaries
and benefits will be competitive compared with the peer institutions
in China.
