Subject: Survey, Computational Science & Eng Grad Programs
We would like to collect information on computational science and
engineering (CSE) graduate programs that are in place today. This
survey is designed to assess the prevalence of Computational Science
and Engineering (CSE) programs in universities throughout the
world. We want to see how these CSE programs are built and
implemented, and where they reside within the university system at
their respective institutions. The purpose is to look at the
similarities and differences of the programs and to provide guidance
on modeling future programs.
If you have a graduate program in computational science and
engineering at your university, we would like to ask you to take a
brief survey to add your program to the database we are collecting. We
plan to produce a brief report describing the current state of the CSE
graduate programs worldwide.

Trilinos 10.8 is available for download.
Below is a summary of the release.
Trilinos 10.8 includes enhancements to many existing packages. It
includes two new packages that were not included in the 10.6 release:
Amesos2 =96 Initial release of the follow-on package to Amesos.
Supports Epetra and Tpetra data classes, 64 bit integers and complex
data. Provides access to SuperLU, SuperLU_MT and SuperLU_Dist.
SEACAS =96 A collection of data and I/O management libraries and tools,
most of which are mature and widely used, but available for the first
time as part of Trilinos.
Overview: The Trilinos Project is an effort to develop algorithms and
enabling technologies within an open source object-oriented software
framework for the solution of large-scale, complex multi-physics
engineering and scientific problems.
Packages: The Trilinos 10.8 general release contains 50 packages:

SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Prize
The SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Prize (SIAG/LA Prize) is
awarded to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper, as determined
by the prize committee, on a topic in applicable linear algebra
published in English in a peer-reviewed journal bearing a publication
date within the three calendar years preceding the year of the award.
For the 2012 award, this is the period January 1, 2009, through
December 31, 2011. The paper must contain significant research
contributions to the field of linear algebra, as commonly defined in
the mathematical literature, with direct and potential applications.
The SIAG/LA will present the award at the SIAM Conference on Applied
Linear Algebra (LA12), to be held June 18-22, 2012, in Valencia,
Spain. The award consists of a plaque and a certificate containing
the citation. The awardee (in the case of multiple authors, at least
one of the awardees) is expected to attend the award ceremony and to
present the paper at the meeting.
A letter of nomination should include a full bibliographic citation
for the paper and a brief statement outlining the justification for
the nomination in terms of its importance and impact. Nominations
should be addressed to Professor Andreas Frommer, Chair, SIAG/LA Prize
Committee, and sent by OCTOBER 15, 2011, to J. M. Littleton at

La Maison de la Simulation, Inria and Cerfacs are organizing a school
in the framework of the Equip@Meso project, on "Alg=E8bre Lin=E9aire
Creuse Parall=E8le" (Sparse parallel linear algebra), at the Bordeaux
Atlantique Inria center, Nov. 28 - Dec 2. 2011.
The aim of the school is to present the basics of methods implemented
in current linear algebra libraries. Both direct and iterative methods
will be presented. Theoretical lectures will be complemented by
hands-on sessions on a parallel platform using state of the art
packages. The school will be followed by a second session(held in
Spring 2012) where more advanced material will be presented.
The school will be held in French, with written material in English,
and lecturers ready to interact in English with the participants.

Computer-based methods for the capture, construction, representation,
fitting, interrogation and manipulation of complicated surfaces have
led to a wide interest in, and need for, the mathematics of surfaces
and related curves. Many applications require the use of surface
descriptions, especially in such fields as computer aided design and
manufacturing, computer graphics and computer vision.
Three types of papers are sought:
- Research papers presenting new developments in the capture,
representation, manipulation, approximation, fitting, and design of
surfaces, with an emphasis on computational methods and their
underlying mathematical principles.
- Research papers covering novel practical applications of surface
mathematics in areas such as CAD, computer vision, computer
graphics, geographic information systems, and architecture,
especially those which pose new problems for the research community.
- Survey papers describing the state of the art of an aspect of the
mathematics of surfaces.
Abstracts of up to 500 words for contributed papers are invited (in
any of the categories outlined above) before the end of September
2012. These should be submitted to the IMA Conferences Department,

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University
invites applications for a tenure-track position in applied
mathematics. While appointments are expected to be made at the
Assistant Professor level, more senior applicants would be
considered. The appointment is expected to be in the broad area of
differential equations and scientific computing. Applicants should
have expertise in both analytical and computational aspects, and an

The Numerical Analysis Group of the STFC Rutherford Appleton
Laboratory (http://www.cse.scitech.ac.uk/nag/) is one of the UK's
leading numerical analysis groups. The main interests of the Group lie
in the solution of large-scale linear and nonlinear equations,
large-scale eigenvalue problems and optimisation problems. We are
looking for a talented and highly motivated individual to join the
Group.
The role will involve conducting independent scientific research in an
area of numerical analysis that is closely related to the existing
research interests of the Group. In addition, the post holder will be
required to contribute to developing, supporting and maintaining the
Group's internationally renowned software libraries HSL and GALAHAD.
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic PhD with a strong
research background in numerical analysis and computational
mathematics. In addition, applicants should have considerable
experience of programming (with expertise in Fortran strongly
preferred). Knowledge of UNIX-based systems and experience of modern
computer architectures would be an advantage.
Candidates should possess excellent communication skills in both
spoken and written English and must be able to work effectively both
on their own and as part of a small team.
Salary is in the range =A326,610 to =A337,534 per annum, dependent on
skills and experience. An excellent index-linked pension scheme and
generous leave allowance are also offered. The post is based at the
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, which is situated 15 miles south of
the city of Oxford.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Brunel

studentship available for a start in November 2011 or as soon as
possible thereafter. The studentship covers (home rate) tuition fees
plus a minimum stipend of =A313,590 for a period of three years. Only
home students are eligible for the studentship.
Current research strengths within the Department include Acoustic and
Electromagnetic Scattering, Applied Analysis, Combinatorics,
Computational Mathematics, Continuum Mechanics, Financial Mathematics,
Operational Research & Statistics and Mathematical Physics. In the
last research assessment exercise, 60% of the research in the
Mathematical Sciences Department has been rated =91World-Leading=92 or
=91Internationally Excellent=92.
