As for probably many others, the anecdote of Dianne O'Leary's recent

There is an interesting blog by Tim Gowers on publishing and

Second Spring School on Numerical Methods for Partial Differential
Equations, Tetouan, Morocco 16-20 April 2012
http://www.urjc.es/hmams/SpringSchool2012/
It is my honor on behalf of the organizing committee to invite you to
participate in the second spring school on numerical methods for
partial differential equations
(http://www.urjc.es/hmams/SpringSchool2012/) which will be held in
Tetouan, Morocco from 16 to 20 April 2012.
This spring school on Numerical Methods for Partial Differential
Equations is aimed at master students, PhD students, recent PhD
doctorates, and researchers in general willing to update their
knowledge with recent developments on numerical techniques that play
an important role in the international scene. As this type of
equations appears in the mathematical modeling of many physical
phenomena, researchers coming from different fields (mathematics,
physics, engineering, biology, economy, etc) can be interested.
This spring school intends to bring together students and younger
researchers from different mathematical and engineering schools and to
offer an environment to acquire basic and more advanced techniques in
the field of numerical methods for partial differential equations. In
a series of five courses, consisting of 3-4 lectures plus a computer
lab-session, each of five international experts will give an
introduction and present new analytical as well as numerical results
on topics of recent interest. In order to enable an intensive
exchange, to enhance the communication and lasting relationships, all
the participants are encouraged to present their own work in a short
talk or with a poster.

Subject: Fractional Diff and Appl, FDA12, China, May 2012
The Fifth IFAC Symposium on Fractional Differentiation and its
Applications - FDA12, May 14-17 2012, Hohai University, Nanjing, China
In recent years, fractional differentiation has drawn increasing
attention in the study of so-called "anomalous" social and physical
behaviors, where scaling power law of fractional order appears
universal as an empirical description of such complex phenomena. It is
worth noting that the standard mathematical models of integer-order
derivatives, including nonlinear models, do not work adequately in
many cases where power law is clearly observed. To accurately reflect
the non-local, frequency- and history- dependent properties of power
law phenomena, some alternative modeling tools have to be introduced
such as fractional calculus.
Research in fractional differentiation is inherently
multi-disciplinary and its application across diverse disciplines such
as physics, chemistry, biology, polymer, medicine, mechanics, finance,
social sciences, notably control theory and signal and image
processing. This is well reflected by the wide scope of the articles
reported in literature. The purpose of this Symposium in series is to
provide the participants with a broad overview of the state of the art
on fractional systems, leading to the cross- fertilization of new
research on theoretical, experimental and computational fronts for
potential uses of fractional differentiation in diverse applications.

International Journal of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing (IJAHUC)
Journal Impact Factor: 0.435 (2010)
http://www.inderscience.com/browse/callpaper.php?callID=1741
In Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) deployments, wireless sensor nodes
should be strategically placed in order to maximize the sensed area
while minimizing the number of nodes to be placed in the
field. Moreover, wireless radio coverage distances should be taken
into account in order to cover large areas. Wireless sensors may be
located quite far from each other, allowing lower deployment costs,
but it may increase the wireless sensor node power consumption due to
the energy needed to reach large distances. Although many factors may
affect the position of each wireless sensor node inside the WSN, there
are two main ones: the radio coverage area, which allows the sensors
to communicate, and, the sensing coverage area, which gives the
sensing region. Both types of coverage areas could be affected by the
field where the WSN is deployed, but different factors affect each
type of coverage. The goal is to maximize the coverage percentage,
while coverage holes should be minimized.
This special issue is focused on sensor node location and positioning
techniques taking into account the aforementioned constraints.

Subject: PhD/Postdoc Position, RWTH Aachen, Germany
At the Institute for Geometry and Applied Mathematics of the RWTH
Aachen we are currently offering a full PhD/postdoc position
associated with the research project "Numerical Fluid-Structure
Coupling Schemes for High-Frequent Surface Motions". This is part of
the interdisciplinary research group FOR 1779 "Adaptive Drag Reduction
by Surface Oscillations" that has been recently approved by the DFG.
The main concern of this project is the development of highly
efficient and reliable coupling tools for the numerical simulation of
the interaction between a turbulent flow field and a surface. In
particular, the turbulent boundary layer is perturbed by micro-scale
mechanisms, e.g., high-frequent oscillations, riblets, aiming at drag
reduction.
The candidates should have some background in computational fluid
dynamics, especially in conservation laws and their discretization
(finite volume methods, DG methods). Some familiarity, at least on a
conceptual level with upscaling or homogenization techniques would be
very helpful. Good programming skills in C/C++ are highly welcome. The
primary qualification is however a sincere interest in learning new
concepts and skills.
The position can be filled immediately. The salary is according to TVL
E-13. The appointment covers a period of 3 years.

from persons with disabilities.
