Subject: Q: A lower bound on the fill-in when factorizing a symmetric matrix
Dear All,
I have a perhaps naive question but I will try anyway.
When computing a Cholesky factorization of a positive definite
symmetric matrix A, then it is well-known that a suitable symmetric
reordering helps keeping the the number of fill-ins and the total
number flops down.
Finding the optimal ordering is NP-hard but good orderings can be
obtained with the minimum degree, nested dissection (aka graph
partitioning based) algorithms. Those algorithms provides an upper
bound on the minimal amount of fill-in. However, I wonder is there any
way to compute a nontrivial lower bound on the minimal amount of
fill-in?
I have been searching the literature but have not found a any good
reference. Do you have any suggestions? The problem sounds hard I
know.
Why is a lower bound important? Well, it would help evaluate the
quality of the ordering algorithms that we have implemented in MOSEK
(www.mosek.com). Moreover, the minimum degree ordering is usually
computational cheap whereas nested dissection is expensive. A lower
bound could help me determine when the minimum degree ordering
potentially could be improved by using nested dissection.
Best regards,
Erling

Subject: Special Issue, Sparse Approximate Solution of Linear Systems
LINEAR ALGEBRA AND ITS APPLICATIONS - CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on: SPARSE APPROXIMATE SOLUTION OF LINEAR SYSTEMS
Recent years have witnessed an impressive research activity in the
area of compressed sensing and sparse approximation. The basic
mathematical problem therein boils down to finding an (approximately)
sparse solution of an underdetermined linear system. While the
l_0-minimization approach to identifying such solutions turns out to
be NP hard, it came as a surprise that efficient alternatives such as
convex relaxation (l_1-minimization) and greedy algorithm are provably
effective in identifying the sparsest solution, if one exists, under
suitable assumptions on the matrix describing the linear system. In
particular, it is possible to recover a suitably sparse vector from
incomplete linear information. Recently, extensions to the recovery of
low rank matrices from incomplete linear information were
developed. Applications may be found in a wide range of areas
including signal and image processing, and numerical analysis.
This special issue is devoted to the mathematical aspects of sparsity
in underdetermined linear systems. Its goals are to highlight recent
advances and developments, outstanding open problems, and the many
facets, techniques, and results of this field. This special issue is
open to all papers with significant new results in the described
area. Survey papers and research problems articles are also highly
encouraged.
The deadline for submission of papers is July 31, 2012, and the
special issue is expected to be published in 2013. Papers should be
submitted to the responsible editor-in-chief V. Mehrmann, choosing the
special issue "Sparse Approximate Solution of Linear Systems", through
the electronic submission system of LAA at
http://ees.elsevier.com/laa. They must meet the publication standards
of LAA and will be refereed in the usual way.

PostDoc Position at IRIT on Energy efficiency in Numerical Codes for
Post-Petascale architectures
At IRIT-University of Toulouse (one of the largest computer science
laboratory in France: more than 600 researchers), two teams (APO and
SEPIA,>20 permanent researchers,>15 PhD) are currently working on
Parallel numerical codes (APO) and Energy Efficiency (SEPIA).
FP3C Project, funded by the French Research Agency is a bilateral
project with Japan. The goal of the project is to address the
development of runtime systems for scientific applications running on
post-petaflopic machines. Within this project, the energy used for
running numerical codes must be reduced.
Building on our current studies on this topic at IRIT, the recruited
PostDoc is expected to contribute to the characterization of the
running applications in terms of energy and performance tradeoff, so
as to exploit phases in the numerical codes and reduce the overall
energy footprint. Investigating both the leverages at the numerical
codes level and at the operating system level (both studied
independently at the moment) will allow for enhanced energy savings
and reduced energy-to-solution.
Requirements:
- A PhD. in Computer Science
- Experience in at least one of the following: Parallel programming,
Scientific computing methods, Performance evaluation, Energy
efficiency, Optimization and Modeling
- Programming skills in C / C++ / Fortran (or eager to learn it)
- Fluent in English, French is bonus
Application due by: as soon as possible, positions are opened until an
application has been selected
Start date: expected on January-February, 2012
Salary: depending on experience, between 1600 and 1800 € Netto.
Contract duration : 12 months.

Subject: PhD/Postdoc Position, Math/Machine Learning, Saarland Univ
A PhD/Postdoc position is available in a joint project of Matthias
Hein (Machine Learning Group) and Simon Setzer (Mathematical Image
Analysis Group) at Saarland University, Saarbrücken. The main focus of
the project is to develop new data analysis methods based on nonlinear
eigenproblems. Nonlinear eigenproblems have recently been introduced
in the machine learning community and offer much richer modeling
flexibility compared to linear eigenproblems. This allows the
development of robust and sparsity enforcing methods for
dimensionality reduction or the tight relaxation of certain
combinatorial problems (graph partitioning) as nonlinear
eigenproblems. In this project, we develop new optimization techniques
to compute nonlinear eigenvectors efficiently and employ nonlinear
eigenproblems to solve a variety of problems in data analysis.
Saarbrücken is located in the south-western part of Germany, close to
the French border. It is home of one of the leading computer science
departments and affiliated with several top public and private
research centers. The working language is English.
We are inviting applications of candidates with the following
background:
- a master/diploma in mathematics, computer science or physics,
- strong analytical skills,
- programming skills (C/Matlab),
- knowledge in at least one of the following fields: convex
optimization, functional analysis, machine learning/statistics.
Postdocs should in addition have a strong publication record in
machine learning/statistics and/or optimization.
The position is immediately available. Applications will be considered
until the position is filled. Candidates must already be authorized to
work in Germany. Please send your application per email to:
