Subject: Chebfun 4.2 release

We are pleased to announce the release of Chebfun Version 4.2,
available at http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/chebfun/. Chebfun is
an open-source system written in Matlab that overloads Matlab's
operations for vectors and matrices to analogous operations for
functions and operators. Version 4.2 utilizes Matlab's new
object-oriented capabilities and incorporates significant
speedups in various operations as well as various new features.
We like to think that "Chebfun can do almost anything in 1D",
usually at high speed and to close to machine precision.
We are particularly proud of Chebfun's capabilities with
differential equations and eigenvalue problems and the GUI
interface to these features.

For an overview of what Chebfun can do, take a look at the
collection of more than 100 Chebfun Examples posted at
http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/chebfun/examples/.

A workshop on "Chebfun and Beyond" will be held at Oxford on
the 17th-19th of September with some distinguished invited
speakers; preliminary information is available at the Chebfun
website and details will be announced soon. A new Chebfun-
related postdoctoral research position is soon to be announced.

Subject: LifeV 2.2 released

The newest release of the LifeV library is out!
http://www.lifev.org/downloads

In order to download it, you first have to register as a LifeV user
https://groups.google.com/group/lifev-user?hl=en

This new release brings some changes and additions:
* A monolithic solver for fully coupled FSI problems, a 1D model and
solver, an experimental 0D solver, to mention just a few. In
addition, it comes with some bugfixes and enhancements.
* This will be the last major release of the 2.X.X series. It will be
followed by the 3.X.X series which will be the first to offer a new
modular structure of the library, allowing you to enable and disable
individual components at will.
* You can configure the library either with the traditional configure
&& make && make install approach, or with CMake. The CMake scripts,
while already fully functional, will receive a facelift before the
next release and we will work to improve their features and
robustness as they will become the prefered method to configure
LifeV.

As usual, please come to lifev-user@googlegroups.com with any
suggestions, feedback or should you encounter any problems. The
developers of LifeV are there to help! We also encourage registered
users of LifeV to use the mailing list as a place to share experiences
and discuss.

We hope you will find this release useful and get some good science
out of it!

We are pleased to host this year’s edition of the annual FEniCS
workshop:
FEniCS'12: High-performance PDE frameworks for modern architectures
June 5–7 2012 at Simula Research Laboratory, Oslo, Norway

Generic software frameworks play an increasingly important role in the
numerical solution of partial differential equations. When new
hardware architectures are introduced, these software frameworks must
adapt to leverage the computational power of the new hardware and to
match the performance of specialized hand-written code.

This workshop aims to bring together experts on generic software for
partial differential equations and high performance computing on
modern architectures.

Topics include: User-friendly programming tools for many-core CPUs and
GPUs; Automated code translation and generation targeting modern
hardware; Hybrid computing using both CPUs and GPUs; Innovative PDE
software techniques; Free/open-source software for numerical solution
of PDEs

Invited speakers: Scott Baden; Andre Brodtkorb; Carsten Burstedde;
Filipe Cruz; Paul Kelly; Ridgway Scott; Andy Terrell; Garth Wells

All FEniCS users, developers and other interested parties are invited
to celebrate the recent release of FEniCS 1.0 and the FEniCS Book, and
to discuss future directions for FEniCS development. A half-day FEniCS
tutorial will be offered as part of the workshop. Participation in the
workshop and tutorial is free of charge.

2nd International Conference on Green Communications and Networking -
GreeNets 2012, 24th and 26th October 2012, Gandia, Spain
http://greenets.org/

Global warming and climate change have been a growing worldwide
concern. Six sources, i.e., transportation, power, buildings,
industry, agriculture and forestry, and land use, have been identified
as major contributors to the rise of global carbon dioxide (CO2). The
mobile industry is seen as a potential enabler to reduce greenhouse
gases contributed by these six sources provided that appropriate
measures are implemented. On the other hand, the mobile industry
itself will also contribute to CO2 emission through network
operations, mobile equipments, etc. To meet the requirement of
low-carbon economy development, it is necessary to reduce the
operation expenditure or energy consumption of mobile networks, while
maintaining acceptable quality of service. This conference will
explore and explain the scope and challenges of designing, building,
and deploying GreeNets. In this regard, the conference aims to
establish a forum to bring together research professionals from
diverse fields including green mobile networks, system architectures,
networking & communication protocols, applications, test-bed and
prototype, traffic balance and energy-efficient cooperation
transmission, system and application issues related to GreeNets.

Topics include, but are not limited to: Communications and Networking;

department, commitment to excellence in teaching, a genuine interest
in improving mathematics education at all levels, and desire to work
with graduates and undergraduates on MCTP related activities.

New Mexico is a majority minority state, and the University of New
Mexico has a majority minority undergraduate population. Both the
university and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in
particular have a strong commitment to cultural diversity. Candidates
should have the ability to work effectively with a culturally and
cognitively diverse community. Women and minorities are especially
encouraged to apply.

To apply visit MathJobs.org (position #3643). A completed application
requires an application letter, curriculum vita, teaching and research
statements. The CV must state, just below the header information,
whether the applicant is a US citizen, national or permanent
resident. Applicants must also arrange for three letters of
recommendation to be uploaded in MathJobs or sent by surface mail to:

Department of Mathematics and Statistics
MCTP Math Postdoc Search Committee

MSC01 1115
Albuquerque, NM, 87131.

For best consideration, the applications, including three letters of
recommendation, should be received by April 18, 2012, however the
position will remain open until it is filled. UNM's confidentiality
policy ("Recruitment and Hiring," Policy #3210), which includes
information about public disclosure of documents submitted by
applicants, is located at http://www.unm.edu/»ubppm. University of New

Applications are invited for 2 Ph.D. Studentships on the following
areas:

1) Numerical methods with applications in Astronomy and Astrophysics
(non-stipendiary position)

2) Numerical methods with applications in Biomathematics
(non-stipendiary position)

The successful candidates should have a solid background in
Mathematics, some experience in programming (particularly Fortran,
Matlab, Mathematica and C) and a strong interest in Numerical
Analysis.

Both positions are available immediately and the deadline for
applications is May 15th, 2012.
