Subject: Bessel Function Derivatives
Does anybody out there know of any software to evaluate the
derivative with respect to the order nu of Bessel function K_nu(z)?
I am interested in evaluations for real valued nu and z. This
function was part of an expression generated by Mathematica as the
value of an integral, but there is no such function available in
that system.
I would appreciate references or any information you can provide.

Subject: Software for Generalized Lyapunov Equations
I would like to announce the release of new FORTRAN codes for solving
the generalized Lyapunov matrix equations
T T T T
A X E + E X A = - Y and A X A - E X E = - Y.
Our software contains implementations of both the Bartels-Stewart method and
Hammarling's method.
The main features of the codes are:
* BLAS/LAPACK-based implementation (good performance, portability)
* implementation in FORTRAN77 (portability)
* estimation of separation and condition number
* scaling to prevent the solution from overflow
* solution of the transposed equations without transposing the involved
matrices explicitly
Manual pages for the main routines and example programs are enclosed.
Moreover, there is a preprint providing further information about the methods
utilized as well as their implementation.
The software and the preprint are available via anonymous ftp at
ftp.tu-chemnitz.de
from the directory
/pub/Local/mathematik/Penzl
where the compressed files
dglp.tar.Z (Bartels-Stewart method: subroutines, manual page, example)
dglphm.tar.Z (Hammarling's method: subroutines, manual page, example)
lyapunov.ps.Z (postscript version of the abovementioned preprint)
can be found.

BLAST Forum MINUTES
The existing BLAS have proven to be very effective in assisting
portable, efficient software for sequential, vector and shared
memory high-performance computers.
A forum has been establish to consider expanding the BLAS in a
number of directions in light of modern software, language, and
hardware developments.
On February 19-20, 1996 we held a BLAST Forum meeting in Nashville.
The minutes from that meeting are available on the BLAST Forum homepage:
http://www.netlib.org/utk/papers/blast-forum.html
We are planning another meeting of the Forum on May 20-22 in Atlanta.
If you would like to contribute to this ongoing discussion specific details
can be found in the BLAST Forum homepage.

Subject: New Book on Global Optimization
NEW BOOK IN APPLIED NUMERICAL ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION
TITLE: Global Optimization in Action (Continuous and Lipschitz
Optimization: Algorithms, Implementations and Applications)
AUTHOR: Janos D. Pinter (pinter@tuns.ca)
PUBLISHER: Kluwer Academic Publishers (kluwer.wkap.com)
SUMMARY
In sciences, engineering, and economics, decision problems are frequently
modelled by optimizing the value of a (primary) objective function, under
stated feasibility constraints. In many cases of practical relevance, the
optimization problem structure does not warrant the global optimality of
solutions found by local scope search approaches. Since the number and
quality of the local solutions is typically unknown, there is a strong
rationality for seeking the globally best solution(s).
The present volume provides a comprehensive discussion of adaptive parti-
tion strategies to solve global optimization problems under very general
structural requirements. A unified aproach to numerous known algorithms
makes possible their straightforward generalizations and extensions, with
a view towards efficient implementations.
A considerable part of the book is devoted to various applications. These
include some generic problems in numerical analysis, and several case
studies in engineering and environmental systems analysis and management.
AUDIENCE: professors, students, researchers and other professionals from
the fields of operations research, management science, industrial and ap-
plied mathematics, computer science, economics, engineering and environ-
mental sciences.

This is a book for people who want to use functional analysis to justify
approximate methods in Mechanics and Inverse Problems. It provides such
researchers with the tools they need without having to assimilate or skip
through concepts they do not need. For the applied mathematician the essential
difficulty attending the study of functional analysis is that the pure
mathematicians who have developed the field have carried the process of
abstraction to increasingly higher levels. In this book the authors have kept
the level of abstraction high enough for the majority of applications, and
have resisted the temptation to abstract to the limit.

part in the competition, here are the details:
The authors of the three best papers in applied and computational
mathematics written by students and submitted to SIAM will be
invited to attend the 1996 annual meeting in Kansas City,
Missouri, July 22-26. Each winner must present his/her paper at
the meeting and will receive a $750 cash award as well as gratis
registration for the meeting. Winners will be awarded
calligraphed certificates at a special prize ceremony at the
meeting. Papers must be singly authored and not previously
published or submitted for publication to be eligible for
consideration. To qualify, authors must be students in good
standing who have not received their PhDs at the time of
submission.
In submitting their work for publication, authors are asked to
consider SIAM journals.
Submissions must be received by SIAM on or before March 15, 1996.
Submissions, which must be in English, can be sent by regular
mail or fax. Each submission must include (1) an extended
abstract NOT LONGER THAN 5 PAGES (including bibliography); (2)
the complete paper, which will be used solely for clarification
of any questions; (3) a statement by the student's faculty
advisor that the paper has been prepared by the author indicated
and that the author is a student in good standing; (4) a letter
by the student's faculty advisor describing and evaluating the
paper's contribution; and (5) a short biography of the student.
Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, and
quality of exposition.
The winners will be notified by June 10, 1996.
