Subject: Bivariate Interpolation of Scattered Data

I am looking for suggestions for the bivariate interpolation of scattered data.
Specifically, I have a rectangular grid of values, z[i,j] = f(x[i],y[j]). However,
for an arbitrary set of combinations of x[i] and y[j] I have no values. There
seem to be many possibilities and some guidance in my choice would be helpful.

Subject: New 2D/3D Unstructured Mesh Generator

GRUMMP
Generation and Refinement of Unstructured Mixed-Element Meshes in Parallel

The goal of the GRUMMP project is to develop automatic mesh generation
software for unstructured meshes with mixed element types. The software
will be able to produce high-quality meshes which meet user-defined mesh
density requirements, using elements appropriate for the geometry and
physics of a particular problem. We envision a system in which common
types of physical problems have pre-defined mesh sizing and element
aspect ratio functions, allowing easy generation of meshes for these
applications areas. For flexibility and generality, the user will also
be able to prescribe these functions (for totally different
applications) or modify the pre-defined behaviors (to provide a quality
mesh in the wake of an airplane wing, for example).

GRUMMP Features

The initial version of the GRUMMP libraries has been released, including
executables for two- and three-dimensional mesh generation and
improvement and for three-dimensional scattered data interpolation.

- Two-dimensional and three-dimensional simplicial mesh generation
- Automatic creation and use of geometric length scale based on input data
- Mesh quality assessment using numerous geometric quality measures
- Improvement of existing two- and three-dimensional meshes
- Complete set of mesh manipulation primitives:
+ Local reconnection --- face swapping and edge removal (latter in 3D only)
+ Optimization-based vertex smoothing --- guaranteed better than Laplacian
+ Point insertion and/or deletion to match local length scale
- Mesh generation and improvement use the same primitives and length
scale calculation, providing uniform results from both processes
- Flexible I/O format (available in 2D; soon to be available in 3D)

The software is available in source form via ftp at

INTRODUCTORY FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS
with Applications to Boundary-Value Problems and Finite Elements
B. Daya REDDY, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch, South Africa
SPRINGER-VERLAG
TEXTS IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS, VOLUME 27
1998 488 PAGES + 144 ILLUS. HARDCOVER $59.95
ISBN 0-387-98307-4

This book provides an introduction to functional analysis and treats
in detail its application to boundary-value problems and finite
elements. It is intended for use by senior undergraduate and
graduate students in mathematics, the physical sciences and
engineering, who may not have been exposed to the conventional
prerequisites for a course in functional analysis, such as real
analysis. Researchers wishing to learn the basic ideas of functional
analysis would also find the text useful. The text is distinguished
by the fact that abstract concepts are motivated and illustrated
wherever possible. Readers of this book can expect to obtain a good
grounding in those aspects of functional analysis which are most
relevant to a proper understanding and appreciation of the
mathematical aspects of boundary-value problems and the finite
element method.

Contents: Sets * Sets of Functions and Lebesgue Integration * Vector
Spaces, Normed and Inner Product Spaces * Properties of Normed Spaces
* Linear Operators * Orthonormal Bases and Fourier Series *
Distributions and Sobolev Spaces * Elliptic Boundary-Value Problems *
Variational Boundary-Value Problems * Approximate Methods of Solution

Subject: New Book on Inequalities

Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, has just published a book
"Recent Progress in Inequalities" edited by G.V. Milovanovic
(Series: MATHEMATICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS, Volume 430,
ISBN 0-7923-4845-1, 532 pp.)

This book is dedicated to the late Professor Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic
(1908-1995), one of the most accomplished masters in the domain of
inequalities. Inequalities are to be found everywhere and play an important
and significant role in almost all subjects of mathematics as well as in other
areas of sciences. Professor Mitrinovic used to say: `There are no equalities,
even in human life inequalities are always encountered.'

This volume provides an extensive survey of the most current topics in
almost all subjects in the field of inequalities, written by 85 outstanding
scientists from twenty countries. Some of the papers were presented at
the International Memorial Conference dedicated to Professor D.S. Mitrinovic,
which was held at the University of Nis, June 20-22, 1996.

Audience: This book will be of great interest to researchers in real,
complex and functional analysis, special functions, approximation theory,
numerical analysis and computation, and other fields, as well as to
graduate students requiring the most up-to-date results.

development and applications. The workshop will focus on topics of
growing importance in process engineering which highlight today's and
future challenges of process simulation, process optimization and the
development of process control equipment.

The topics include but are not limited to

-- Separation technology and transport phenomena
-- Reaction engineering and catalysis
-- Process design, operation, integration and development

Computer Science Graduate Fellowships
University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Computer Science Department at The University of Tennessee has
created two Graduate Fellowship positions. These positions will have
stipends of $7500. We expect that a fellowship would normally be
awarded in conjunction with a graduate teaching or graduate research
assistantship. For a Masters'-level GTA position, which currently
carries a salary of $8756 plus a tuition waiver, such a fellowship
would bring the compensation to $16,256, and for a PhD-level GTA
position, with a salary of $9728 plus a tuition waiver, the resulting
compensation would be $17,228. Research assistantships are usually
12-month positions with a salary of $10,500 to $12,000 or more, and a
fellowship would add $7500 to that salary.

Applications will be competitive, and must be received by March 1 for
positions that commence in the Fall Semester. Persons who are awarded
these 1-year fellowships can apply for continuations each subsequent
year.

For application forms, see our web pages (www.cs.utk.edu), or send us
e-mail at: straight@cs.utk.edu with a subject of "fellowships". You
can also receive the forms by regular mail to: Computer Science Dept.,
107 Ayres Hall, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee,
37996-1301.

Please Note: International applicants need to know that we cannot make
any award (GTA, GRA, or Fellowship) until an applicant has been
admitted to the Graduate Program in Computer Science, and every year we
see many very good GTA and GRA applications where the student has
either not applied for graduate admission or not completed the
application process (e.g. missing transcripts, GREs, TOEFL, etc.) in
time for us to award a GTA or GRA position. International applicants
need to be aware that we are under various time constraints.

schools that share an interest in using computing to advance research and
education in the scientific disciplines. The CSC and affiliated
departments/schools are actively seeking highly motivated graduate students
to participate in computational science. Prospective degree students will
apply to a CSC-affiliated department/school, but be engaged in an
