Subject: Mathieu and Spheroidal Wave Functions
I am looking for Fortran routines
to generate Mathieu and Prolate Spheriodal Wave Functions
which arise when solving the wave/helmholtz equation in
elliptical and spheroidal coordinates respectively.
The separation of the scalar Helmholtz equation in
elliptical/spheroidal coordinates
results in mathieu/spheroidal wave functions.
I would be very grateful to get information about
any existing FORTRAN routines for evaluating the Mathieu "radial" & "angle"
functions and prolate spheroidal "radial" & "angle" functions.

Subject: Polynomials with Random Coefficients
Can anyone help with the following problem in the area of random matrices?
We have r_i uniformly distributed in [-1,1] and compute from it the values
d_i = r_i-2r_{i-1}+r_{i-2} which are then `bell-shaped' distributed:
\phi(d) = x^2/32 + x/4 + 1/2 -4 <= x <= -2
-x^2/32 + 1/4 -2 <= x <= 2
x^2/32 - x/4 + 1/2 2 <= x <= 4
We want to study the monic polynomial
| 1 ... z^{n-1}|
| d_{2n-1} ... d_n |
D_{n-1}(z) = | ... | / (coefficient of z^{n-1})
| ... |
| d_{n+1} ... d_2 |
Numerical evidence suggests that the coefficients in the above polynomial
follow a Gaussian-like distribution with mean value 1, in other words that
statistically the polynomials D_{n-1}(z) and 1+...+z^{n-1} are `close'.
Is anything more specific known? We also expect the variance to get smaller
as n becomes larger.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Subject: Approximation of Polynomial-exponential Expression
Dear colleagues!
I have a function
%
$$
p(B,Z|b,z,n,m) \propto B^b e^{-nB} (B+Z)^z e^{-m(B+Z)}.
$$
I would like to
1) integrate it over $B$ and use it as univariate function of $Z$,
2) multiply it by $Z^k$, where $k=0,1,2$ and integrate over $B$ and $Z$.
I am searching for suitable approximation that would lead to 'easy'
evaluation (without polynomes of degree $z$ and high factorials; powers
of $z$ and exponentials are acceptable) in both the cases 1) and 2). The
considered magnitudes are:
-- $m$, $n$ are constant integer numbers of magnitude 10 -- 100,
-- $b$ is constant integer of order $10^2$,
-- a) $z$ is constant integer of the same order as $b$ or
b) $z$ is constant integer of order $10^4$ and higher
-- in case 1) the value of variable $Z$ can be arbitrary non-negative.
There can be also several approximations and each of them would cover some
particular case mentioned above. I will be grateful for any tip or advice.
What is it?
It is Bayesian solution of radioactive source intensity $Z$ estimate on a
radiation background $B$. The function mentioned above is non-normalized
probability density function of $B$ and $Z$.
-- $b$ is total count of particles coming from the background during $n$
seconds; for each second the counts are Poisson distributed with
mean value $B$,
-- $z$ is total count of particles coming from both the source and the
background during $m$ seconds; for each second the counts are
Poisson distributed with mean value $B+Z$.
The aim is to find first two moments of $p(Z|...)$ and/or desired
credibility interval of $Z$ occurence.

Subject: Parallel Linear Algebra Package General Solver Available
Parallel Linear Algebra Package General Solver Available
During the last two years the PLAPACK project at UT-Austin has
developed an MPI based Parallel Linear Algebra Package (PLAPACK)
designed to provide a user friendly infrastructure for building
parallel dense linear algebra libraries. Now that this infrastructure
has stabilized, we have started developing libraries. The first
solver available, PLA_Gesv, solves general linear systems.
PLAPACK provides a high level abstraction for coding dense linear
algebra algorithms. It is often believed that such a high level
abstraction comes at the price of lower performance. We are happy to
report that while this is temporarily true for smaller problem sizes
(where the fact that we have not yet optimized the infrastructure is
still noticeable), the higher level of abstraction allows for more
sophisticated algorithms to be implemented, which attain higher
performance for larger problem sizes.
The following performance comparison between PLAPACK and the
equivalent ScaLAPACK routine on a 16 node Cray T3E-600
(300 Mhz) demonstrates this:
Performance of dense linear solve
(in MFLOPS/sec/processor)
n PLAPACK ScaLAPACK

2000 66 101
5000 174 168
7500 228 201
10000 268 209
The ScaLAPACK performance numbers were derived from those reported in
the ScaLAPACK Users' Guide. We conducted our own experiments on the
T3E used to collect the PLAPACK numbers and found the ScaLAPACK
numbers to be representative.

July 3rd to 5th, 1998
Organizers:
C. Carstensen (Kiel)
P. Kosmol (Kiel)
M.S. Petkovic (Nis, Yugoslavia)
The aim of this Symposium is to bring together mathematicians
working in all fields of iterative processes with the aim of
approximating the zeros of singles or systems of equations.
The nature and origin of the equations is understood in a
broad sense ranging from classical topics as the simultaneous
computing of all the zeros of an algebraic polynomial to the
sparse non-linear systems as they, for instance, arise in a
finite element discretization of non-linear partial
differential equations or optimization problems. Linear
iterative solvers for high-dimensional systems belong to the
scope of the symposium on its own or with emphasise as part
of a non-linear problem. The subtile problem of finding
initial conditions for a local solution is of interest as
well as computable sufficient conditions for convergence or
general local higher order methods.
Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to, the following:
o Optimization
o Control theory
o Calculus of variation
o Plasticity
o Partial differential equations
o Contact
o Microstructures
Everybody interested in the topics of the symposium is warmly
invited to attend. Please let us know about your intention to
participate by April 15, 1998. A second announcement with
further information, in particular, concerning hotel
accommodation, will be distributed in April 1998.
Call for papers: Participants wanting to give a talk (20 min)
should submit an abstract before April 15, 1998.
Notification of acceptance will be given on April 30, 1998.
