Subject: Ruediger Weiss

On December 18, 1999 Ruediger Weiss died by a fatal traffic accident.
He was a leading specialist in the field of generalized conjugate
gradient methods. His book "Parameter-Free Iterative Linear Solvers"
presents a unifying theoretical framework for iterative solvers for
linear systems. A full professorship for the chair of High Performance
Computing Systems combined with the directorate of the computing
center of the University of Rostock in Germany had been offered to him.
He was in the final state of negotiations and intended to accept the
chair in March 2000. The tragic death of Ruediger Weiss is a bitter loss
for the scientific community, for his friends and collegues. Our
compassion is with his wife Christel and his two little daughters.

This monograph in two parts,is an intensive and comprehensive study of
the computational aspects of the moduli of smoothness and the Global
Smoothness Preservation Property (GSPP).It introduces substantial
motivation and examples for key results, and includes a systematic and
extensive study of the computation of moduli of continuity and
GSPP,presented for the first time in the book literature.Furthermore, the
book discusses extensive applications of moduli of smoothness and GSPP
concepts to approximation theory, probability theory, numerical and
functional analysis, and presents GSPP methods to benefit engineers in
computer-aided geometric design.

PhD and Postdoctoral Positions at the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology--Lausanne

Applications are invited for PhD and/or Postdoctoral positions within
the Chair of Applied Analysis and the Laboratory for Computation and
Visualization in Mathematics and Mechanics ( LCVM^2 ), which form part
of the Department of Mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology (or EPFL).

The work of the group is concentrated in two areas. The first is the use
of techniques of continuum mechanics in modelling DNA, and the second is
in the use of visualization in parameter continuation problems,
including distributed parallel computations. The work on DNA is carried
out in close collaboration with various experimental groups. There is
some possibility for the work on parameter continuation and
visualization to be pursued in collaboration with the Swiss Super
Computer Center at Manno.
